Taking a break from therapy

Postby MellonCollie » Wed Aug 08, 2018 11:04 am

I feel like it might be best for me to take a break from therapy for a while. I had been seeing a regular therapist for quite a while, then she referred me to an EMDR specialist. I had been doing that for a few months now, but my mental state has only been getting worse throughout the process, especially after my most recent session. I'm not really learning any sort of coping mechanisms - if anything, I'm just "putting things in a container to deal with next time", as the EMDR specialist has encouraged.
Max was really mad and has been sort of quiet since Friday.

Will you still be able to take the prescribed medications? It sounds like it was working to some extent and that you are better off with it than you were 3 years ago.
A break from therapy was frightening for me. I felt that its effectiveness had leveled off and I was afraid of regressing back to where I was before therapy.
It was like learning how to swim or like moving out of the parents house.
I did stay with a 12-step support as a group therapy. I put a dollar in the basket for coffee at each meeting, so it was considerably cheaper than the therapist co-pays. It wasn't like I was completely detaching myself from all support, but I found myself ready to move on. Like an 'aftercare' after being an outpatient.
I feel that I know enough now to ask for help if I need it, so maybe I'll be OK.
Best of luck to you. :D

I can get my meds through my GP (which actually makes them cheaper), so I've got no worries there. I've thought a bit about looking for a group. Max is kinda "meh", but I kinda think it might be good to have a group environment.
Thanks for the response :) It's to hear about someone having a good experience from stepping back from therapy.
