Best way to help my stutter?

Postby Abi123 » Sat Jan 13, 2018 9:25 pm

I have a problem when talking where I loose my breath when I'm talking and it sounds like I am hiccupping. Someone told me online it could be dysrhythmic phonation and I think it could be. My speech problems are caused by anxiety especially socially.

Anyway I have tried using techniques to help my stutter but that is stressing me out because it feels like I am spending lots of time focussing on helping my speech. For example I have tried to slow down when I'm talking, to take more breaths when I'm talking and before I start talking, speaking louder. My brain is so occupied with trying to help my self its making me exhausted. What is the best thing do you think I cant see a speech therapist yet but I have just started a new job my speech is worst and I'm more anxious. I want to help my speech but I don't want to get into the habit of thinking about it all the time it stresses me out and it has happened before where I'm concentrating to much on how my speech comes out & have lost track of the conversation.

It's hard not to think about your speech. Just try your best. I do recommend a speech therapist once you can see one, if you'd like. I stutter and when I start to stutter I just shut down and stay quiet, until I feel more calm and relaxed. But if I begin to stutter or can't mouth a word, I change the subject or like I said, I just don't talk much. Give answers like "yeah," "no," "yes," to at least not appear like I am stuttering. I get embarrassed if I do stutter. I know I can't help it and I don't stutter often but it's still there.
