She has been having severe back spasms and was currently at Stanford medical for 3 months before we had to return home. It so frustrating cause the pain seems real to us but medically all they find is that she has an extra vertebrae and mild scoliosis, she lost 40 lbs before we took her to Stanford. Does anyone know of any other help for us cause right now she is on 9 meds and its hard on us as parents to deal with the pain she has. PLEASE HELP US!!!!! GUIDE US TO HELP

Hi,

I don't completely understand Somatform Disorders but what sort of testing has she received regarding this? I mean, has she seen a a specialist that deals with Scoliosis? ... ...have ye spoken to a spinal surgeon?

Other than that, I can only suggest researching scoliosis on the Internet. There, you will find information on how to alleviate the pain.

Hiya,
I know you posted this a long time ago but I hope you still get it. I hope that your daughter is getting better by now.

I am 18 with a 22 month old son and live alone in Birmingham, England, with the help of my boyfriend who helps me a lot.

I have recently been diagnosed with somatoform disorder having thought I had MS for a couple of years. I have had every test under the sun and suffer from spasms in my arms, neck, back and legs. I also have constant pain which means I walk on crutches and barely leave my house.

It seems this is similar to what your daughter is suffering and I have been unable to find anybody else with this condition anywhere.

I hope that you get in touch and we can discuss the effects of this both mentally and physically and hopefully help each other to cope and understand this frustrating illness.

Thank you, I hope to hear from you soon,
Michelle xx

Hi Michelle,

I don't think that thise user will be back with us. We get people like her a lot - they just make one or two posts and then vanish into thin air. Somatoform is a rare thing and I'm aware that there isn't much information on it. Did your doctor not direct you to useful resources for it though?

Hiya,
My GP has tried but says he doesn't know of anybody else with this problem. My psych has said the same thing.
Do you know of anybody or anywhere I can get some information from?
Thanks,
Michelle

Hmm, that's bad (that your GP and psych couldn't help you), and I'm sorry to say that I don't have any information on it either. Have you tried to just search for information using http://www.google.co.uk

?

Re: 12 YR OLD WITH PAIN DISORDER

Chronic pain does not have to be a Somtoform disorder. I have had unspeakable pain for over five years. Lots of doctors don't mind diagnosis people with Somatoform, simply and solely because they run tests and they are unable to find an answer. The truth is that they are not doing their homework...

I have RSD, Reflex Sympathetic Distrophy and it is a real disease. Go to RSD Hope or RSDSA.com to see if this is what you might have. You could also have a nerve entrapment. I have a nerve entrapment in my buttock (nerve entrapments and RSD go hand in hand), which was finally diagnosed when a doctor did a Neurography of my sciatic nerve (dr. Aaron Filler in CA). When people have an entrapped nerve, all of the nervous system can fire pain. That is why even though the origin of my pain is in my buttock, I have pain in the whole leg, back, hands and so on. I can hardly use my arms (L5 sensitization). When I move my arms the nerve roots in my spine get a little streched and that causes pain. I can't walk or sit for long at all.

Again, disability due to pain is not a mental disease. Pain is simply not well understood by doctors who don't do enough research on pain. Never believe a doctor who dumps you or a loved one into the Somatoform category simply because tests are all normal. Pain cannot be shown in a test.
