Leg pain

Postby Vanish44 » Fri Jun 02, 2017 3:18 pm

Hello. I am new to this site and am seeking fellow sufferers with my symptoms to ask how they cope. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety in 2010 and towards the end of my recovery I developed pains in the upper back of my right thigh. I have had extensive investigations for these pains (MRI, xrays, etc) but there has been no physical explanation for them. These pains have remained since 2010 and my depression and anxiety returned last August and I am on treatment for this but the pains in my leg are now dominating my whole life. I cannot sit without severe pain but can walk without any pain. I use a heat pad, microwavable hot bottle and TENS machine when sitting to try to alleviate the pain but nothing works. I take Clonazepam 1mg twice daily to try to relax me but this is now having little effect. I have tried CBT but that was no help. My mental health team tell me I have somatoform pain disorder but having this diagnosis does not help if I cannot find a way of overcoming the pain. How do other sufferers cope?

Hi!

Did it get better since you posted?

I am strong advocate that most illnesses have a mental cause.

E.g. i had a friend had extreme pain in her leg and could bareley walk. MRI etc. And doctors were puzzled.

Actually, her boyfriend was bugging her about moving to australia and work there. It was the last thing she wanted to do and her leg revolted.
As she then told her bf her view on things and that she was not going to move the pain in her leg dissolved after only 2 days.

Is there anything your body is trying to tell you?

Thank you for replying. Yes it is a mental problem but I do not know how to control it. Thanks for your help.

What parts of your body have actually been examined?

I was told for years that i was making up my pain, but recently the doctors have actually found a physical cause for it.

have you had your back, hips and knees examined? have you got any issues with your ankles? any hypermobility symptoms at all?

you can walk, but can't sit, that makes me think that the problem could be with nerves (i'm not a professional.. just someone that lives with constant physical pain).

what kind of pain exactly is it? (ie; burning/shooting pains/severe ache/a feeling that your bone is being twisted/something else..?)

If all that has genuinely been ruled out (i'll be surprised but pleased if it has.. ), and it's definitely somatization in nature, then all i can think of is to try and figure out why it is that your body hates sitting down..
were you taught as a child that sitting still is being lazy and to be worthwhile you should always be doing something productive?

sorry if that's a bit intrusive xx
Shine me a light up
and i'll run round the moon..
