Very strange behaviour & injuries while I sleep

Postby Sleep angel » Tue Oct 25, 2011 1:06 pm

Hi Everyone

I am brand new to this forum and have basically joined to share my experience and hopefully get some feedback from people that have experienced similar issues. Since my early teenage years I have periodically engaged in some very strange behaviour during the night. I am 31 now, and after hurting myself quite seriously recently (read on), I'm looking for some information to better understand why I do what I do.

Every episode is different.. Sometimes I wake up very confused, work out I have been sleepwalking and take myself back to bed, while other times I don't wake at all, have no recollection, and hear reports of my behaviour from my partner or other members in the house. Of the years I have been doing this, here are some episodes that stand out for me:

Locking myself out of the house
Changing the clocks in the house
Pulling my room apart and sleeping on the floor in another room
Walking around the house/up and down stairs/to kitchen/lounge room
Waking my partner/family up and telling them I am dying (eg can't breathe, having a heart attack, been poisoned)
Standing over people/at the end of their bed while they are sleeping
Screaming and crying because something has frightened me (eg intruder in house, roof caving in over the top of me, something in bed ie spiders)
Sitting up in bed/at end of bed
Attempting to call people on my mobile
Collecting valuables from around the house and bringing into the bedroom
Taking my clothes off
Thinking my partner in bed next to me is a stranger
Getting ready for work (feeling like I need to be somewhere)
Disorganised speech and conversations

I find all of this behaviour quite disturbing but not as frightening as a recent episode which resulted in me injuring myself quite badly. On this particular night, I had woken earlier (around 11.30pm) from an isolated sleepwalking episode. My bedside lamp was on and I was sitting at the end of my bed. Recognising that I must have been sleepwalking, I simply went back to bed. Approximately 2 hours later, I woke up in an enormous amount of pain. I was on the floor, completely disorientated and crying. My mother soon entered my room and turned the light on to discover my face completely covered in blood. My nose was broken, my teeth had perforated my lip and I had several cuts on my face. I also had large bruises on both my shins. I looked around my room for any evidence of a fall, and with the exception of my hat stand in the corner being broken, everything looked unobstructed.

I still have no idea what happened to me that night, and I am very afraid of something like that happening again. I sometimes find myself not wanting to sleep by myself just incase I do something I can't control.

I would appreciate some feedback/advice from anyone who has experienced anything like this. Thanks for taking the time to read!

Hi, Sleep angel! Have you spoken to doctors about this? Maybe there is medication and some kind of therapy that might help, it could be worth looking into.
Stick around, hopefully more people will reply and share their experiences! :D
How are you doing?

Jasmin when I broke my nose I went to a doctor and explained the situation and I felt that he did not believe my story! I guess this means I need a new one hey! I have not taken any medication thus far (and would prefer not to) but given my little problem is not going away I may need to consider.

Have you experienced anything like me?

I haven't but I have a relative who did, it must be scary for you. Uh, the doctor didn't believe you? Darn, try another one if you can.
