Bipolar For Beginners: for those just diagnosed and families

Postby grantthorsson » Sun Feb 22, 2015 8:03 pm

I have been diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder in October 2011. When the psychiatrist announced the news, he didn't give me any additional information. “Have you got any questions?” he asked, but I didn't know what to ask, so I said nothing. I was previously diagnosed with depression in 2004, and lived with that diagnosis for seven years. Bipolar II was something completely new to me; I barely even heard about existence of such disorder.

When I got diagnosed, I was buying countless books, trying to understand my disorder and how it will change my life. There was something I was missing: a short book explaining in layman terms what exactly is going on with me; what sorts of medication exist and what do they do; what can I do other than take my pills and avoid drinking and drugs. There were short pamphlets and there were 500+ page tomes, but I couldn't find a short "manual" that would give me some understanding at the most basic level of the illness I suffered from. Two years after my diagnosis it occurred to me I could, actually, write this book myself. It took eight months of work and research; in the meantime I changed hospitals and teams, have been hospitalised myself and started seeing the process of my recovery as an invaluable source of knowledge to share.

My book, “Bipolar For Beginners” is the effect of this work. I divided it into sections – just diagnosed; what causes bipolar disorder; medication and non-medication ways of fighting bipolar; lifestyle; frequently asked questions; resources; interviews with five bipolar sufferers. It is a short book – on purpose; once you have read it, you will no doubt have more questions, and the resources section tells you where to find the answers.
