do you do this? adult SM

Postby Weetzie Bat » Thu Aug 27, 2009 7:06 pm

i was diagnosed with SM when i was 16 and seeing a psychiatrist for other mental health issues.. i was really bad back then but since about age 20 its been better (im 23 now) but i still feel its something i struggle with.

i wondered if any of you experience the following problem...

when im angry with my long term boyfriend and we're fighting for whatever reason, i find it impossible to speak to him, no matter how much he pleads or even cries i just cant make myself talk. do any of you do that?

Something like this only happened to me once, and I therefore do'nt believe that it's related to SM. To be honest, I don't know too much about SM in general anyway. What does your boyfriend say when you can't talk back to him? If you think about it, SM in a situation like that could actualy be positive.

I was diagnosed with SM when I was 4 and have been a lot better since I was 18 (Im 21 now), but still struggle. Honestly I have never had what you experiences. And it doesnt sound like Selective Mutism. Is it because you are scared to talk to him? Or are you too angry?

I don't think it's caused by SM.
It might be because of your anger, your current thinking, fear, worry, maybe your subconscious or something else, but not SM.
Do you still have this problem, anyway?

I have selective mutism, and when my boyfriend and i fight, sometimes, i have unable to talk to him, just like yourself. So, you're not alone.

Hello,

I absolutely have no idea if what I have is SM or not, but whenever I am in conflict with anyone, even thought there is a LOT of things I want to say, to express, I absolutely can not speak, like at all!

It has been this way for as long as I can remember, and it doesn't matter who I'm in conflict with. It can be my mom, a teacher, or even a friend. I think the only times it didn't happen was when I was really young and got into fight with my older siblings, that's all.

I don't know it that helps you though...

Good luck!

Yes!!!! Not so much when fighting, but when I'm really upset. Like I try so hard to speak, and I can hear myself saying the words in my head, but my mouth will literally not open to make any sounds. It's incredibly frustrating. And usually when it happens, it takes a few hours to wear off even if I'm not upset anymore.
