What's Laziness?

Postby CityMouse » Mon Nov 26, 2018 3:23 am

What exactly constitutes a lazy person by definition? Is it concrete or subjective?

I think laziness is a myth. I think a "lazy" person is just someone who doesn't do what they don't want to do or lacks interest in things society deems conducive to "success."

It's subjective. Or, more to the point, it's a cultural/moral perception.

It's too easy a word to use. Like being incorrectly diagnosed with a specific disease when the symptoms alone suffice as an explanation for your complaints. I don't think anyone is truly lazy. If you worked hard all day and eat Chinese take out on the way home does that mean you're too lazy to cook dinner? If you set yourself on fire and just sit there and burn does that mean you're too lazy to put the flames out? There's always an underlying cause for what passes for laziness.

In a nutshell, I'd say that different people have different circumstances and different priorities, and the concept of laziness assumes/implies that they don't.

“Laziness is a myth”

That’s getting framed and put on the back of my bedroom door.

When I am accused of being lazy, or when I catch a silent accusation brewing, this is my answer:

And what, in God’s name, is all this pother about? The ranks of life are full; and although a thousand fall, there are always some to go into the breach. When they told Joan of Arc she should be at home minding women’s work, she answered there were plenty to spin and wash. And so, even with your own rare gifts! When nature is “so careless of the single life,” why should we coddle ourselves into the fancy that our own is of exceptional importance?
