Awesome scene.
The dissonance created when a violent or horrible thing is being done amidst a stunning backdrop, or beautiful music, adds an extra punch, in film.

I feel like a lot of people know about this aria. They may not know what it is, but they know about it. The story of Pagliacci, the sad clown. Ruggero Leoncavallo composed quite a few operas, and they were all flops. His biggest rival was Gaicomo Puccini, who is undoubtedly one of the greatest opera composers of all time. Every single Puccini opera is still played to this day. Outside of Pagliacci, you may find students performing a Leoncavallo opera, but you're not going to see one at a major opera house.

Franco Corelli did it well, most tenors did, it's not the most demanding aria. Fun facts about the aria, back in 1906, it was the first record to sell a million copies, only with Enrico Caruso singing. I've seen the record on eBay, at $100,000.00. Would be nice to add to a collection, if it even worked. Another fun fact, Caruso and Corelli were the only two major opera singers that were self-taught. Caruso revolutionized opera. Corelli didn't, but don't discredit him, he was still excellent at what he did.

The lyrics, translated to English, go as follows...

Act! While in delirium,
I no longer know what I say,
or what I do!
And yet it's necessary... make an effort!
Bah! Are you even a man?
You are a clown!

Put on your costume and powder your face.
The people are paying, and they want to laugh here.
And if Harlequin steals away your Columbina,
laugh, clown, and all will applaud!
Turn your distress and tears into jokes,
your pain and sobs into a smirk, Ah!

Laugh, clown,
at your broken love!
Laugh at the grief that poisons your heart!

I hear it as

Act! While in delirium,
I no longer know what I say,
or what I do!
And yet it's necessary... make an effort!
Bah! Are you even a man?
You are a baker!

Put on your uniform
The people are paying, and they want to eat here.
And if someone steals your doughnuts,
smile, baker, and all will applaud!
Turn your distress and tears into jokes,
your pain and sobs into a smirk, Ah!

Smile, baker,
at your broken life!
Laugh at the grief that poisons your heart!
Email me if you want a doughnut
