Therapist moving...devastated and afraid

Postby psystudent20 » Sun Jun 18, 2017 4:27 pm

Good day all,

Today I'm writing because in my therapy session this week, in the last 5 minutes my therapist let me know her house finally sold. I am happy for her, but this really upset me. What am I to do? I started seeing her in February- any progress I've made is completely trivial in comparison to how bad I've been doing. My therapist has become a staple in my life...have I made a mistake? Every week I see her on Friday. By Thursday I hear myself saying "I can't wait for therapy tomorrow, need it so bad..."

Anyhow, I don't think I can take to another Therapist in the office I've been going to. I have three weeks left with my T. When she told me the news, I shuddered down. After a minute, tears started to well. I was too embarrassed to tell her how upset I truly was when she told me. I felt weird, wondering why I was crying? Is this mild transference? Or is this just a part of having a therapist? I'm 20 and therapy has changed my life. Sadly, with all that I've shared with my therapist- all my secrets and my personality as a whole, I feel so exhausted at the thought alone of meeting a new T, re-spewing all of this information...Please...can anyone who's going through/gone through this help me? I feel afraid.

Thanks guys,

M.

I had become very close to my therapist. I had shared the deepest corners of my soul with this person and like you, found that she was moving on.
It was very difficult hearing this news at first, but things smoothed over with time. Life went on as before and I was glad to have known her.
You will get over the shock. Best of luck to you. :D

I don't have any good advice, unfortunately. I can only say that sucks. Sending you a cyber hug, for what it's worth.

Good luck.

I hope that the closing sessions of your therapy went well. Closure is often the most difficult aspect of treatment if you've developed a close bond. The fact that you felt the way you did about it could be a testament to the amount of work you did in allowing yourself to trust and grow. And maybe now you have an opportunity to realize what stays with you and grows even if you're not meeting weekly anymore. My hope for you is that it allows for you to own that growth as yours

Hey there, thank you so much for writing
The last session was intensely difficult. I cried hysterically, and my therapist cried, too. She told me she didn't feel it would be ethical not to recommend me to another T. She talked with one of her colleagues, who just so happens to specialize in EMDR, about me. She's taking my case and I meet her on Friday. It's the first time I've wanted to skip therapy. I'm not sure what to expect.

Hi,

I'm so sorry to hear. The same thing happened to me with the therapist I was seeing before. It is normal to be upset. I also started crying when my T told me he was moving. Is she willing to keep in touch with you, maybe do online therapy? My T was older and he refused. I still miss him and would have made a ton of progress if he would have kept in touch, but ultimately the day will come when you will be grateful of all you learned from your T, you won't need her to be actively in your life and you will find another T you will click with. Good luck!

Hey there,

Thanks. She originally suggested we do online therapy, but I was doing so bad she said it wouldn't be ethical that she didn't recommend me to a colleague to continue sessions. My new T is really great, we clique well. I want to talk to my old T, but I was scared to ask her for contact info. I didnt want her to shut me down. I wanna ask the front desk for her info but I'm scared they'll say no.

Did she leave already? Yes, ask them at the front desk. If they won't give you her contact info (which they might not), ask if they can forward something from you and write to her.

She has left, yes. Thanks, I think they would probably do that for me...never thought of it
