Am I narcoleptic? Please Help

Postby asid » Thu May 02, 2013 12:53 am

I am in my teens and lately I feel like I could possibly be narcoleptic. I am normally a good student however my grades have been dropping (about six months ago) because I could not stay awake while doing homework or sometimes even in class. It was like I kept trying to keep my eyes open but they kept on shutting and I would go in and out of sleep till someone nudged me awake and then I would feel completely awake. These urges to sleep were completely random to me but nonetheless I started sleeping really early (around eight). This did not help. Lately at night I would randomly wake up and been unable to move my leg. Could that be a symptom? My parents had thought it was diabetes (my dad had junior diabetes and exhibited the same symptoms at my age) however I was recently tested negative. I am really just confused and frustrated. Any comments or advice would be great.

You really need to get this idea disregarded by seeing someone who knows about narcolepsy. Did you mention this possibility to a doctor. You need to get properly diagnosed and may need to see a specialist. Its surprising that the gp didn't refer to someone else. Even a sleep disorder clinic or neurologist.

I think in narcolepsy, one just falls asleep. I didn't know that they felt tired or sleepy.

Did you tell all these symptoms to your doctor or did he not ask any questions of this kind.

Your best bet is to see an ENT doctor or a sleep specialist.

Narcolepsy means an irresistible tendency to fall asleep. Narcolepsy caused by the brain's inability to regulate sleep-wake cycles normally. It is a neurological sleep disorder. It may occur at any time during the day especially in the daytime. Men are more affected by this chronic neurological disorder than women, and the condition usually begins in adolescence or early adult life. Seventy per cent of patients also suffer from Cataplexy.
