Cured Narcissists?

Postby Silesyan » Fri Jan 05, 2018 12:20 pm

Are any of you or someone you know a completely cured narcissist? Is it even something possible?

It is possible through bioenergetic analysis therapy as long as the person is cooperative. :D :D :D
OCD+NPD+antisocial behavior (but not ASPD)

What would you define as "cured"?

I don't alienate and offend people anymore, I value my relationships and put effort into them, but I'm definitely not perfect.

I think the cure for NPD is to feel very much valued and accepted, to feel loved, to be challenged and motivated to change. And then years of effort...

I think the reason why a lot of narcissists don't change is because deep down they don't feel accepted or like they would be accepted.

As having empathy towards others?

How does this feeling of being valued and loved differ from narcissistic supply?

It cannot be cured. It is like picking up glass shards on the floor and piecing them back together with glue. It will prick your fingers and you will bleed everywhere.

NPDs do not want to change. It is a gift that we do not want to lose and become "normal."
Diagnosed partially of each: NPD, BPD, Bipolar 2, OCPD, OCD
Psych Ward: 7 days ER: 2x No self-harm + In psychiatric treatment

I felt like the big breakthrough in getting over NPD is when you realize that you're the bad guy. (But feel other people still care about you even though you're the bad guy.) Because when you realize that, you are able to see the bad things that you do and how you are hurting others.

When I was NPD, I was always afraid that if I opened up to other people about my feelings or my issues, other people would judge me or reject me, or I would lose my reputation.
I think that's probably a big reason why pwNPD get stuck in their maladaptive behaviors.

It's totally different when you feel that you have people in your life who will love you and accept you no matter what you do.

NPD can be cured (as well as other PDs) only with a psychodynamic psychotherapy - specifically with the Transference Focused Psychotherapy. Other than that, there are also few cognitive-behavioral therapies, but they aim purely to improve symptoms. TFP has a goal of changing the personality organization by going into the depth of mind. Sadly, although it has been around since 80s, it's still not quite easy to get involved in the therapy. But if there's someone who is willing to make a significant change in their lives, I'd definitely look for a trained specialist. Conditions can be pretty tough, f. e. going to work/school on daily basis (especially for covert NPDs). It's structured twice-weekly. I'm currently one year in the TFP, went from being totally isolated and lying depressed all day long to going to college, having friends and moving out from my abusive parents. It can take up to 3 - 5 years in total. So, definitely there's a big hope nowadays to get your personality truly cured. But it's also a very big, difficult commitment and difficult treatment.

Thanks for the informative post!
How's your progress regarding empathy? Does the therapy also help generating empathy or is it powerless there?
