Thanks to the grand advancement of technology and studies in the medicine and health department, new diseases and illnesses have been discovered over the years. Many diseases from a wide variety of kinds have been discovered. However, not all diseases affect the physical condition of a patient. Some diseases are capable of affecting a patient’s mental health. Among the various types of mental disease, Tourette syndrome is one that stands out. Tourette syndrome, also commonly known as Tourette's disorder is a neuropshychiatric disorder that is inherited with onset during the stages of childhood. Tourette's syndrome is characterized by multiple physical (motor) tics. Also, patients with this syndrome may present and at least one vocal (phonic) tic. It’s also important to know that these tics characteristically wax and wane from time to time. Tourette's syndrome has been defined as part of a spectrum of tic disorders. This also includes tics that are both transient and chronic.

There was once a time when Tourette's syndrome was considered to be a remarkably rare and bizarre syndrome. The majority of the time, it would be associated with the exclamation of obscene words or other actions which may be considered socially inappropriate. However, this symptom only appears in a delicately small number of people. In modern days, Tourette's syndrome is no longer considered a rare condition. However, in the majority of cases, this syndrome is not correctly identified. This is because in most cases, the symptoms are quite mild. Its important to know that this syndrome does not interfere nor affect the intelligence of children. Also, in most cases, these symptoms decrease as they experience adolescence.

In regards to the causes of Tourette's syndrome, it has been proven that genetic and environmental factors play an important role. However, exact causes for Tourette's syndrome to this date remain unknown. There is an effective medication in the treatment of tics. However, there are medications and certain therapies that may serve as assistance to help keep them under control. It’s of crucial importance that knowledge and reassurance are given to the patient. Sometimes, these two pieces of information are enough of a treatment.

Since the presence of tic symptoms do not regularly become a cause of impairment, the grand majority of people that suffer from Tourette syndrome do not have a need of medication for tic suppression. However, in the case where the symptoms interfere with daily life and functioning, there are meditations to help with the tics. Neuroleptics are currently the majorly consistently and useful medications applied for tic suppression. There is certain number of these available. However, some may be more effective than others while others may not be of much help in tic suppression.

Tourette syndrome can be easily handled and kept under control with the correct knowledge and assurance. It’s important to lend assistance to people suffering from this disease. Above all, it’s crucial to be supportive of them to communicate to them that everything will be ok and that there will be no problems.
