Schizophrenia is a disorder that affects the mental health of the affected individual. This disorder affects the patient’s awareness of reality. It has not been easy for researchers to find out the exact causes of this illness. Some of the causes of this disorder as studies have shown are listed below.

Genetic Causes
Genetic structure could play a major role in the development of Schizophrenia. It has been seen from researches that an individual who comes from a family that has a medical history of Schizophrenia has a high chance of developing the mental health disorder. Such persons have up to 10% probability of developing the disorder as against 1% probability by others.

Though genetic structure is not actually a decisive factor that can cause the ailment, it is just an influencing factor. This is so because about 60% of persons who are affected by Schizophrenia were discovered to have no family history of the disorder.

Environmental Causes
Stress has been identified as a cause of Schizophrenia. Research has it that a high level of stress is very likely to set off the disorder. This is because a high level of stress causes different biochemical changes in the patient’s body and it also increases cortisol hormone levels in the body.

Pregnancy Related Causes
When there are complications during delivery, there is a great chance that the child born during that delivery will be affected with Schizophrenia. Complications during pregnancy can cause hypoxia in the neonatal brain and this in turn causes higher chances of the child being affected by Schizophrenia in his
Adult life. This finding is supported by animal model, genetic studies and molecular studies. For this reason, it is advisable for there to be adequate and proper care for pregnant women and they should try to avoid stressful conditions as much as they can. They should also have good and balanced diet.

It has been shown by studies that women who do not eat properly or who are malnourished during pregnancy have a high chance of delivering children who suffer from Schizophrenia. In one of the studies carried out on women during the 1939 Winter War, a group of women were informed of their husband’ death during pregnancy while another group was informed of their husbands’ death after delivery. It was found out that the first group of women went through a lot of stress because of the bad news and became more at risk of giving birth of children affected with Schizophrenia. But the second group of women had a far lesser risk.

Also, women who get infected with viral infections during pregnancy have a high chance of delivering a child who is at risk of being affected with Schizophrenia.

Neurological Causes
A lot of functional and structural changes in the brain could cause Schizophrenia.

Researchers are presently still carrying out studies to find out more accurate causes of Schizophrenia. With medical science getting better and more advanced, the study of Schizophrenia will become better understood and better treatment methods will be developed.
