Dogs get mental disorders too

Postby somebody » Wed Oct 20, 2004 11:15 pm

Searching the Internet for information on Prozac, I just found an astonishing article on dogs suffering from a certain type of anxiety! Apparently, seven million dogs in the US suffer from that condition. I never thought that animals can have mental disorders, I knew that dogs experience some type of feelings that are like those of humans, like love, sadness, jealousy etc, but I had no idea that animals can have mental disorders too.

Dogs are nuts to begin with.

Having always had a dog, I agree that dogs suffer from mental disorders. And not just a few of them. They all have their lovable neurotic ways about them. Most of them suffer from separation anxiety at the very least.
I remember one dog, Moses, that we got from the local shelter. Lab mix. This dog one minute was licking your face, and the next trying to bite your nose off. Totally unpredictable. We got this dog for my parents, Both in their late 60's, and it was chosen because, on his cage, was a sign that read "great with children". Imagine that. That dog bit me twice.
Go figure. Also had the sweetest, most endearing dog in the world. Ever notice that some animals are sensitive to how you're feeling? That's the beauty of dogs, unconditional love, and loyalty.
Plus they can't talk.

I know. They get things like separation anxiety and do alot of chewing and have destructive behavior. Some of that comes from mental disorders. And they will prescribe Prozac if its necessary.

Dear messed up,
What habbits are driving you crazy with the dog? One of our dogs would destroy the house when we were away. He tore up the pillows on the sofa and later we we kept him in the kitchen he scratched the doors. His former master had a terminal illness and he developed some seperation anxiety. We called in an animal behaviorist and he is much better now. The vet wanted to put him on Prozac. I'm glad we held off and got the behavorist instead. I never knew animals can feel trauma. I guess they are like humans.

I think anything with a brain can get a mental disorder.
