Why was Shostakovich so sad?

Postby Tyler » Tue Aug 13, 2019 4:35 am

I must know. Was it because he had episodes of depression and lived in a bad time in Russian History and hated Stalin, or was it because he didn't have any doughnuts?

It could also be because the toilet paper in Russia around that time wasn't very good.

My dad read a biography on Shostakovich. Russia was very oppressive of it's people. It was difficult to be happy when the secret police came pounding at the door, food was scarce and the people were poor.
There was war, famine, disease, suicides and alcoholism.
He had to compose marches for Stalin and the elites. He didn't like Stalin and he may have spent time in prison. He was always under the threat of 'vanishing'.
He suffered from depression (melancholy) which really had no treatment at the time. His early pieces were not well received.
He had a hard life. The wiki will give you some idea:

He was sad cause he knew his best work came as a result of conforming to Stalin's tastes.
