YouTube and Netflix addiction. Today is when it stops :)

Postby davie081 » Fri Nov 09, 2018 1:24 pm

It seems as though this is the most appropriate place to post this. I could also mention that I masturbate daily to porn in the case that I’m not with my girlfriend. I view the porn as not overly problematic though as it takes up a short amount of my day.

YouTube and Netflix on the other hand get in the way of me doing the things I really want to do. I would like to: expand my knowledge on things related to my profession in my spare time outside of work, spend more quality time with my gf, go to the gym more often, sleep early, hangout with friends, read, etc.

I’ve tried quitting these things so many times I can’t kee track of it. Netflix isn’t actually that difficult. However, if I quit YouTube than Netflix would be a substitute.

I’m going to try starting today to quit and replace YouTube and Netflix with more productive rewarding and fun activities. I’m wondering if anyone else has had success quitting these things? And how you accomplished it?

I would also like to use this thread to post days of not using and how it’s going. I use an app called Habitica that keeps me accountable for getting tasks and dailies done, so I’ll add this in.

Thanks for the support! I’ll be back here at least once a day.

Mini Update:
I just typed in YouTube and after 2 seconds realized what I just did. It's amazing that it becomes such a habit that I've been unconsciously going to YouTube. Clicked out of it after seeing some recommended videos. First moment of adversity haha

So far so good! Gf is on board to help me out. Set blockers on YouTube and Netflix on laptop and deleted apps and set restrictions on sites with my phone. These help so it’s at least not a click away. Volunteering this evening than working out afterwards :)

Day 2 and doing well. My gf and I watched part of a movie last night. This is allowed though, as I’m allowing occasional movies with her. Other than this have been Netflix and YouTube free and I’m feeling good about it.

You seem to be making good progress Davie081 . It takes a while to break old patterns of behavior and enlisting support from your GF is a really smart move .

I am trying to get outside a lot more . Gardening in the summertime helped a lot with that and I'm taking more walks when the weather is good . I still feel like I spend too much time " surfing" at night though . I've been setting myself a firm shut off time and it seems to be working out OK . I haven't been giving in to the " Just a few more minutes ..." urges like I used to . I've been reading more books too - new ones and some old classics that I love .

Keep at it ! Taking control of an impulsive behavior feels great . :D
