My cat died today.

Postby ailuj. » Mon Sep 13, 2010 12:03 am

I'm sad beyond belief, he was my best friend. I've had him for more than ten years and grew up with him.
I cant stop crying, everything reminds me of him.
I was at work when my mom called and told me he was gone, I regret not having a chance to say goodbye.
I'm not good with emotions, I haven't cried for a very long time. I don't know what to do.

I wonder would saying goodbye make it any less painful? I don't think I could ever get myself to do that if I knew my pet was on death's door. I wouldn't be able to speak.

I would get another cat asap to ease the pain at least a little bit.

See the thing you may find strange is that I have 6 other cats. I don't live in a small shabby house like a crazy old cat lady, my house is fairly large and very clean. I take care of my cats and love them all so much.
But I've never lost a pet before and just losing one of them makes my house feel so much emptier, he was definitely the friendliest of out of all of them.
Oh, and saying goodbye definitely wouldn't have made it easier, but It would have given me a chance to see him once more.
I hate the idea that I'm never going to see him again.

See, I agree with you about saying goodbye, it is a shame you couldn't have. But you have to know that the last memory that the cat had of you was pleasant. I hope he/she went quickly and didn't suffer.
I could never understand how someone could love an animal for years and then walk away before the vet had to put it down. To me that is an act of disloyalty.
But thats not you. You loved the cat. Something to think about is that your not the only one grieving. The other cats will be too.

((((ailuj)))) Very sorry for your pain & sorrow... In regards to being able to say goodbye, it's still incredibly painful, but I think it does help a bit & I feel better for having had that opportunity myself.

I lost my 11 year old kitty in 2008 due to an incurable disease. The medication only maintained his life for awhile, then stopped working altogether. I'll never forget the morning I woke up & he was in such a horrible state (so much fur loss, couldn't stand on his own, mewing in pain, etc...), I knew I had to finally take him (for the last time) to the vet. The vet let me hold him while they injected him & I told him how much I loved him and wanted to see him no longer in pain. He's now laid to rest in the family pet cemetery.

As part of my therapy, I made a scrapbook w/photos of little Teddy and took the opportunity to give my love to other kitties. But, I still mourn...
The more people I meet, the more I love my cats!

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's always hard to lose a pet. I lost one of my cats a few months ago and it was hard, but I got to hold him when he died and that made me feel a little bit better about it, because it made me feel like he knew he was loved. So, I completely understand about wanting to say goodbye and also about feeling like the house is empty. I couldn't believe for weeks that he wasn't going to be waiting for me in the window when I came home.

I think the scrapbook idea is great if you have pictures. I had a few really good pictures of my cat that always made me smile when I looked at them, so I put them in a frame and hung them up next to my desk for awhile so I could see them and it made me feel better over time, because it would remind me that he had a really good life. And I spoiled the hell out of my other two cats for a few weeks and that helped, too.

This is such sad news.I am so sorry you lost your cat. The other cats will adjust. Give them lots of affection. Maybe you can find a photo of her and frame it?
Big hug,
