Reading

Postby Dbetterlife » Tue Mar 09, 2021 2:32 pm

Guys and Gals. Reading Everybody story has really helped me.
I have had different gambling addictions that I have stopped
And then found something else. In our state they legalized online sports betting
And in a covid year I got readdicted quick, sports gambling everyday. It took about 7 months
for a real bad streak to happen over a weekend and I lost probably 20k.
I ended up winning my last bet on that bad streak and something hit me hard that I don’t
want to really screw up my life.
I disabled my gambling apps immediately which was only 15 days ago and instantly
started reading everything I could. I started with gambling addiction books many free on Amazon prime
Kindle app, but then started reading travel books and mental toughness books.
It’s all helping. Reading something new everyday is helping me getting past this horrible scourge.
The kindle app even congratulations you on a reading streak of so many days which is almost as good as
A streak of non gambling days. I am day 15 of reading and not gambling

Welcome Dbetterlife,

Online gambling is horrible. In the physical casinos, we can see our money going away, but with online betting, you can lose thousands on just a few clicks. A small online relapse can burn a big hole in our wallets.
I am happy to hear you are reading a bunch of books. I find that the more effort you put into your recover, the less likely you will relapse because you don't want that all that effort wasted.
If you SAY you will do this and SAY you will do that.... well, those are just words and you'll find relapse imminent. That is what most of my recovery looked like at the start.
Might I suggest reading books on mindfulness and CBT. I learned a lot about those in my in-patient treatments and found them useful in my recovery.

Thank you for your post! It reminds me that I should refresh my memory on those topics and take out some books from the library.
