Understanding my loved one.

Hello, I'm writing to better understand the difficulties of a loved one.

Are there any resources describing the effect of early loss of parents (not by death, but by drug addiction) and the subsequent departure from home to live autonomously in early adolescence? And, perhaps, how to communicate effectively with somebody who has been through such difficulty?

Thank you. The request is vague, but I am willing and eager to read as much as is necessary if somebody can guide me at all.
