Using exposure therapy

Postby Butterfly Faerie » Sat Jul 11, 2009 8:39 pm

I have found this really helpful. It is incredible tough. It's one of the hardest things I've had to do to over come anxiety, though I still get it... but it is more under control then it used to be.

The only way anyone can deal with fears and anxiety is to face it. But you don't just go out and face it all at once, you take little steps up to it. I remember my old pdoc telling me to do simple steps even though they aren't when you are anxious, for example.

-Get to the door
-Open the door
-Go down the drive way
-Walk to the corner

so on and so forth, all the time doing breathing techniques, positive self talk etc.. anything that helps.

If you have to take a step back, it is OK to do so, just continue to force yourself the next day..

Exposure treatment is not just good for anxiety disorders, but does wonders for those suffering from PTSD.

Never give up with this, it is incredibly hard, scary, uncomfortable ,but once you do it you'll realize there was nothing to be worked up over. I know it's hard to believe... but once you do something you know you can do more.
