how to find a DID therapist?

Postby spinningtops » Wed Jan 27, 2021 9:11 am

Hi so on my journal I posted that I lost my therapist and realized that it was not the best for me, so now i am looking online for a therapist and I find that in psychologytoday, find a therapist you can't put in DID as an issue. I guess cause of how many issues there are around DSM controversies? I don't know. But I guess i can't put in the term to look into one?
The good news is that apparently I will maybe be able to get another therapist at some point soon, so that is really good for me. I will look for a therapist either way, but I just am nervous, how to find the right one? I had a hard time with CBT based cause I would say this hard thing and they'd rephrase it to be positive, and no it wasn't positive and that was hard?! I started wanting to not share stuff cause i felt like it maybe would be minimized. And I know I need to be patient too, that it probably takes a while for things to get better. And that some are going to fit better with me then others.
And then the second therapist wasn't there at all really.. so.. I just am feeling really confused, but thinking it may be going better this time. And am gonna try again, but yeah was surprised about not seeing a way to look for one that will work with DID or that that was even a choice available.. But again I know it's controversial now, but it's hard cause like you want to talk to someone who you feel will understand you.. okay. Anyways that's all. thanks.

Hello.
I registered on the forums and created discussion threads. Psychologists answered them and among them I found my own psychologist.

Hi spinningtops,

Anyone can list themselves in psychologytoday and put anything they want as their specialties. You can search for "dissociative disorders" but therapists often list that without actually knowing anything about DID or OSDD.

You have a better chance of finding someone who knows about DID/OSDD or who is at least more trauma-informed here:

isstd.connectedcommunity.org/network-find-a-professional

Therapists have to be a member of ISSTD to list themselves, so they're likely to have at least some interest in trauma and dissociation. But you still need to interview them carefully to find out if they have ever treated someone with DID and know the guidelines, etc.

Can you elaborate more on how you did this? We need to find one.

Thanks,
