Any Tips For Therapeutic Visualization?

Postby WhyDoIExist » Sat Apr 04, 2020 3:24 pm

I was wondering if anyone could help me on this. My counselor wants me to work on therapeutic visualization as a coping technique for my OCD and anxiety. Since I'm heavily into anime, she suggested I incorporate that into my 'place'. Let me explain: Basically she talked me through a visualization of a peaceful meadow, trying to get me to calm myself down. You know, the typical laying in the grass, hearing birds chirp, that sort of deal. She went on to suggest I find a special safe place of my own that I can go to when I'm having bad thoughts and stuff. Now, I do think this is worth a try, very interesting actually, but I'm a little stuck as far as how to actually come up with it. Like, do I sit down and plan this whole scene out? Should I use preexisting characters or make some up? Does it need to be a quiet scene that stays in one place the whole time?
If any of you guys have a particular 'place' you go to, please tell me about it in the comments.

Start simple and then add to it

Maybe a place you've been to that you really enjoyed and felt comfortable in (or would love to go, etc) and then add what you'd like

What's most important is that you practice regularly and while in decent mind states because things are always harder to do when struggling

Engage the 5 senses and different directions.

What can you see?
Feel?
Hear?
Smell?
Taste?

What's infront of you?
Behind you?
To your left?
To your right?
Above and below you?

One I used to use, that's common for many, is the beach

Feel the cool or warm, wet or dry sand under your feet
Feel the sun on your skin and maybe a light breeze

Listen to the waves crash against the shore and maybe some seagulls calling

Smell the salt ocean air

Maybe the water is in front of you
The sun is shining from your right
Some bushes are behind you
There's a stretch of sand beach on your left as far as the eye can see
Azure blue sky above you without a single cloud

Or maybe you're standing in the water..

Lots of YouTube videos and phone apps offering suggestions too, I'm sure

One of my favourites, for comfort or sense of safety, is being in the water

Although more often, I tend to use visualization for the Silva Method's level two mental relaxation as part of the process of entering into a different state of mind all together

Based on how they make me feel, I usually find images to examine ahead of time and then use them - or mix and match

This is what I currently use.
I go down to the house and there's a porch area to sit and relax.
My current problem is wanting a cigarette with it
I used to relax in nature or sit outside and smoke all the time as a relaxing activity.
It's still a craving from time to time.

For me these things just seem to drain me. I.e. trying to go this deep in imagination. Why?
