In AA, we had a discussion once about the difference between 'cash register honesty' and having to live a lie. I had to ask myself: 'What was I hiding from'?
I did hide my drinking, but it was painfully obvious to those around me that I was continuing drinking. The slogan: Fake it until you make it, brought me no comfort. I tried to pretend that I didn't care, but somewhere deep inside I did care.
It was a battle between the disease of addiction and wanting to stop the insanity. I had to unlearn what had worked as a poor defense in the first place. I had to learn that I could come out of hiding and be myself. Recovery is a process, not an event, but it is a personal decision nonetheless.
Best of luck to you. :D
