Blog Subject:  Careers Fair

Well careers fair was a bust. Everyone else there was about half my age (I think teaching might be out as I wanted to kill them all  ). It was all about hairdressing and metal work apprenticeships for school leavers. I would say to ppl at the stalls I have 3 A levels at grade A and a medical degree - what can I do with them in your field and they would just say either I was over qualified or that would have to retrain :( I got a bit of useful stuff from the social care stall except they thought that I would prob be pushed towards management because of being quite highly qualified and I am not sure that is for me. The other interesting thing I looked into was medical photography and I am going to follow that up by calling the hospital and speaking to someone in that department about qualifications etc. but overall it was a bit demoralising. I did make a brooch and ring at a fashion design stall tho - which was a highlight. What I need is a careers fair for grown ups (there were 10 year old kids at this one today) where I can say these are my A levels, this is my degree what can I do with them without needing much retraining?

Feel a bit demoralised and overwhelmed atm and also have no idea how to amend my cv to a more general one.

Huge hugs

Hi Cracked,

That's tough about the job fair. I went to job fairs years ago, and never had much luck at them either. Once you decide what you want to do, you could always work with a recruiting firm that specializes in placing people in your chosen occupational area. I had good luck with recruiting firms, although sometimes you have to try a few out before you find one that is a good fit for your career search.

If the medical photography path doesn't work out, I recommend you think about all of the subjects you studied when earning your medical degree and think about the careers in the subjects you excelled at.

What about veterinary medicine? It sounds like you love animals and with your medical training it might be a good fit. Although, I am not sure how much additional training it would require.

Good Luck,

Hologram

Thank you so much for all your advice hon. I really appreciate it, thank you. I think that it sounds like a plan to talk to a recruiting firm. It just all seems so much to do - I need to write my CV too!

I have found a very part time job working with Mind which I think I might apply for as it sounds good. They are looking for ppl with personal experience of MH issues to help assess Mind services.

I did wonder about being a vet but there are two things that I think make it a no - it will mean doing a 6 year course from scratch and also i think I would seriously struggle with putting animals down. Dead animals are a massive trigger for me. But thank you for the thought - I really appreciate it

Good luck with the Mind service job.

I used to want to be a vet, too. I decided not to for the same reason you did. I would never be able to live with myself if I put an animal down or an animal died and it was my fault.
