have you meds stopped working?

Postby Son » Wed Feb 06, 2019 2:02 pm

Has anyone been on a med for a long time and then had it stop working? I've been on the same meds for 8 years (lithium is relatively new for me and we're still getting it into therapeutic range).

But the other two: Abilify and Lamictal, I've taken for 7 years. I remember them both pulling me out of mood swings and mania, but now its like they're doing nothing at all. I have had awful depression and manic swings for an entire year now.

Is this common?

In 2015, Lamictal (lamotrigine) pulled me out of a depressive episode like magic. I was depressed as hell and within a few months I was back to normal. Unfortunately, it gradually stopped having an effect. Roughly 3 years after starting Lamictal, I found it was more or less ineffective at my dose (~250mg/day), and raising or lowering dose did not make a difference.

Working in the medical field I see it all the time, once you been on something for that long your body develops a tolerance and you will no longer see effects anymore. Ive experienced this first hand, I have chronic pain and something that worked for a while just one day stopped.

Hope you are well.

Yes, I was on seroquel started at 300mg and then when it pooped out we kept increasing the dose until I got to 900mg and then gave up on it. It's happened to a few other meds too.

Yes, this is happening to me. I have been taking Lamictal for about 9 years, and am all the way up to 500mg. It does not work that well, but I have tried many other drugs that were much worse. The Lamictal used to work really well. Has anyone had success switching to something else, if so which one? I am in the process of switching to Lithium but it doesn't seem quite as helpful with the depression (more so with mood stability and symptoms). My doctor is ok, but not very helpful with this issue. I'm also taking Wellbutrin and Adderall which help a little bit. (I cannot take SSRIs which eliminates a lot of antidepressants).

I also take Lamictal. I found the use of an antipsychotic drug helped stabilize my depression. Somehow it did the trick, all three things combined, wellbutrin, lamictal, and vraylar.
