IPIP-NEO & HEXACO-PI-R tests

Postby tom556 » Tue Sep 11, 2018 8:36 pm

There's been a fair share of online personality tests here like MACH-IV or Short Dark Triad SD3, but they're more like quizzes and the answers are way too obvious. I found two online tests with solid scientific backing, made by actual psychology researchers.

  • IPIP-NEO by John Johnson Ph.D. from Penn State University. This is a long-form Big Five personality test, 300 questions, takes approximately half an hour to complete.

Wikipedia wrote:The five factor model of personality has significant relationships with the dark triad combined and with each of the dark triad’s traits. The dark triad overall is negatively related to both agreeableness and conscientiousness.[16]

More specifically, Machiavellianism captures a suspicious versus trusting view of human nature which is also captured by the Trust sub-scale on the agreeableness trait.[88] Extroversion captures similar aspects of assertiveness, dominance, and self-importance as narcissism.[88]

Narcissism also is positively related to the achievement striving and competence aspects of Conscientiousness.

Psychopathy has the strongest correlations with low dutifulness and deliberation aspects of Conscientiousness.[16]

  • HEXACO-PI-R by Michael C. Ashton, Ph.D., Brock University and Kibeom Lee, Ph.D., University of Calgary. It's a HEXACO personality test. 100 test questions plus some research questions. Takes like 15-20 minutes.

Wikipedia wrote:The honesty-humility factor from the HEXACO model of personality is used to measure sincerity, fairness, greed avoidance, and modesty. Honesty-Humility has been found to be strongly, negatively correlated to the dark triad traits.[89]

Likewise, all three dark triad traits are strongly negatively correlated with Honesty-Humility.[16] The conceptual overlap of the three traits which represents a tendency to manipulate and exploit others for personal gain defines the negative pole of the honesty-humility factor.[90]

A study found that individuals who score low in Honesty-Humility have higher levels of self-reported creativity.[91]

My results:
IPIP-NEO:
  • Agreeableness 1
    • Trust 14
    • Morality 1
    • Altruism 1
    • Cooperation 10
    • Modesty 12
    • Sympathy 1
    • Conscientiousness 45
      • Self-efficacy 60
      • Orderliness 95
      • Dutifulness 20
      • Achievement-Striving 49
      • Self-Discipline 35
      • Cautiousness 25
    • Extraversion 78
      • Friendliness 50
      • Gregariousness 61
      • Assertiveness 85
      • Activity Level 85
      • Excitement-Seeking 90
      • Cheerfulness 32
    • Neuroticism 20
      • Anxiety 2
      • Anger 61
      • Depression 30
      • Self-Consciousness 20
      • Immoderation 38
      • Vulnerability 25
    • Openness to Experience 32
      • Imagination 4
      • Artistic Interests 31
      • Emotionality 5
      • Adventurousness 63
      • Intellect 75
      • Liberalism 75

    HEXACO-PI-R:
It's a little bit trickier than IPIP-NEO, the easiest way to get the exact score is to save the result to PDF after the test is done. It basically prints out traits in this pattern:
[Trait] [Your score] [Average score] [Middle 80% of scores]

    My scores:
    • Honesty-Humility: 1.59. Avg = 3.22, middle 80% = 2.41 - 3.97
    • Emotionality: 1.40. Avg = 3.34, middle 80% = 2.63 - 3.97
    • eXtraversion: 3.72. Avg = 3.50, middle 80% = 2.72 - 4.22
    • Agreeableness: 1.50. Avg = 3.00, middle 80% = 2.22 - 3.72
    • Conscientiousness: 3.38. Avg = 3.47, middle 80% = 2.72 - 4.16

Keep in mind that this HEXACO test has been normed on students of a decent uni, so for example conscientiousness scale may be higher than in the general population.

I did the HEXACO test. I'll do the IPIP-NEO test later when I have more time.

My scores are the first ones (colored green), then you have the median score (50th percentile) and then middle 80% of scores (10 to 90th percentiles)

I'm guessing 1.00 is the lowest score you can get and 5.00 is the highest.

    Honesty-Humility 1.63 3.22 2.41 - 3.97

Reaper have you still got a link to the ripped version of the mmpi-2 ?
I mean we can argue the relative merits of these tests, and there’s nothing wrong with the big 5, but from a pathological standpoint they’re about as much use as Anne Frank’s drum kit.

    Yeah: http://notnearlydead.tumblr.com/

    From this blog. : https://cognitivedynamics.blogspot.com/2015/05/mmpi-2-take-mmpi-personality-test-free.html#gsc.tab=0

You should read that before taking the test.

The results may not be entirely accurate, but if taken honestly, you can't deny they give some insight.
