List of "mentally ill" killed by police , help create it

Its going to be big. Here is why,

An investigation by the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram has found that a disturbingly high percentage of individuals shot by police suffer from mental health problems. There are no federal statistics on police shootings of mentally ill people, but according to the investigation published this week, “a review of available reports indicates that at least half of the estimated 375 to 500 people shot and killed by police each year in this country have mental health problems.”

http://www.salon.com/2012/12/10/half_of_people_shot_by_police_are_mentally_ill_investigation_finds/

The increase in police brutality in this country is a frightening reality. In the last decade alone the number of people murdered by police has reached 5,000. The number of soldiers killed since the inception of the Iraq war, 4489.

I have no idea what the number is, in another forum we started a list of those killed by psychiatry mostly with drugs and we are up to about 245 , we are not supposed to link to other forums.

I guess we just start listing and if its obvious NAMI was involved post it here too,

South LA Demands Justice After Shooting Of Ezell Ford By LAPD Officers
Posted: 08/15/2014

Earl Ofari Hutchinson, president of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable, said Wednesday he has asked for a meeting with Police Chief Charlie Beck after he saw media reports about the shooting.

LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith said two veteran gang officers were driving down West 65th Street on Monday night when they spotted Ezell Ford, 25, walking on the sidewalk. An LAPD statement, citing a preliminary investigation, said the officers got out of their car and tried to talk to Ford but that he “continued walking and made suspicious movements, including attempting to conceal his hands.”

(CNN) -- Seventy seconds: That's how long a North Carolina family says it took for things to go horribly wrong as they sought police help dealing with their mentally ill son.

Keith Vidal, 18, died Sunday. According to CNN affiliate WECT, he was just shot 1 minute and 10 seconds after a third law enforcement officer showed up at his Brunswick County home.

The three officers all were from different jurisdictions, and family members say that the third officer -- who came from a nearby city -- turned what had been an improving situation into an unnecessarily aggressive encounter that ended in their son's death.

"There was no reason to shoot this kid," the teen's stepfather, Mark Wilsey, told WECT on Monday. "They killed my son in cold blood. We called for help, and they killed my son."

Albuquerque cops assault and kill camping homeless man

A video showing Albuquerque cops assaulting, shooting and killing a mentally ill homeless man who was illegally camping has sparked outrage and calls for greater oversight of the consistently brutal police department.

ProgressNow, a New Mexico-based progressive advocacy group, noted that while “Albuquerque’s new police chief, Gordon Eden, announced Friday that he had determined officers who shot and killed a homeless camper on city property on March 16 were justified in their actions … a video from the scene released by the department on the same day shows officers negotiating a peaceful surrender with the subject, then attacking him with a flashbang grenade as he walks towards them on their command.”

When 38-year-old James Boyd then retreated from the bombardment, he was shot with live rounds and later died.

#8 Michelle Cusseaux

The family called “NAMI” …. Garret said she called mental health organizations to get her daughter help and get her into in-patient treatment.

Francis Garret, along with Rev. Jarrett Maupin and others paid a visit to Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton on Monday. Garret said she called mental health organizations to get her daughter help and get her into in-patient treatment.

“This was the result. I didn’t phone them and ask for my daughter to be killed. I did not ask for Michelle to be another statistic here, another homicide. I did not call them for that reason,” said Garret.

On Thursday, police showed up at Cusseaux’s apartment near 55th Avenue and Indian School Road to serve an order for an emergency mental health pick-up. According to Phoenix police, they knew Cusseaux had multiple mental health issues and that she had threatened to shoot clinical staff if they came to her apartment.

Police say Cusseaux refused to comply with their requests to step outside through a locked security screen door and shut the interior door.

They then picked the locked on the security door to attempt to contact her. That’s when police say Cusseaux flung the interior door open and stood their with a hammer in her hand. After repeated commands to drop the hammer police say she lunged toward the officers.

One shot was fired, and Cusseaux died. No officers were hurt.

#9 Yanira Serrano-Garcia

The family of Yanira Serrano-Garcia said they called 911 around 9 p.m. Wednesday because she was acting erratically and refusing to take her medication, and they were hoping paramedics would show up and help. Her aunt told KTVU the 18-year-old suffered from depression. The family had previously received just such medical assistance, Raw Story reported.

The California family called 911 for medical help for their mentally ill relative. Instead of a paramedic responding, police arrived and fatally shot the 18-year-old woman .

#10 Jason Moore

Ferguson police officers restrained a mentally ill man and repeatedly shot him with a Taser, causing him to die of a heart attack, a federal lawsuit alleges.

The suit was filed Tuesday by Tina Moore, who says officers used excessive force in arresting her husband, Jason Moore, on Sept. 17, 2011.

11. Dainell Simmons, 29.

Man Tased By Suffolk Police Dies Following Altercation

The officers, two women and a man, initially were able to calm Simmons after they were summoned to the Maryhaven Center of Hope facility, a tidy, two-story house with brown shingles and black and white trim in suburban Middle Island.
play

But when they told Simmons they were taking him to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, he began kicking and punching them, Fitzpatrick said.

All three officers wrestled with the 240-pound Simmons on the floor while trying to handcuff him. Two of them used a Taser on the resident; he also was hit with pepper spray.

Police said they are working to determine how many times Simmons was tased.

I posted this in the wrong thread:

This incident is infamous in Canada.

Also: this isn't definitively mental illness, but I have my suspicions:

I think this is an anti psych topic because psychiatry is allowed to use police against people not charged or suspected of any crime.
