Online support groups for BDD + win $50 Amazon voucher!

Postby NottinghamUniversity » Thu Apr 24, 2014 8:49 am

Dear all,

I am reposting my study into online support groups for body dysmorphic disorder and participants (old and new) can enter a prise draw for a $50 (£30/€37.5) Amazon voucher.

Online support groups (OSGs) have been found of value to a number of mental and physical health conditions but have not yet been looked at within the context of BDD. I want to see if such online groups (such as the forum for BDD on here) may help empower those who suffer from the disorder.

The study, which has been approved by the University of Nottingham Research Ethics Committee, consists of an online questionnaire comprised of multiple-choice questions that take approximated 10 minutes to answer.

For more information and to take part in the study, please click on the link below:

http://www.survey.bris.ac.uk/nottingham/osgsbdd

To enter the Amazon voucher prise draw please e-mail me with your participant codes at: ttxom6@nottingham.ac.uk. For those of you who have participated already this constitutes your first and last initials followed by the date and month that you were born, i.e. IIDDMM).

Thank you for your time and we would be extremely grateful if you are able to complete the questionnaire.

We hope that the results will help those with BDD.

Kindest Regards,

Oliver (MSc student) & Dr Neil Coulson

Hi Tyler77,

Thank you for your question.

BDD stands for 'Body Dysmorphic Disorder'. It is a condition whereby an individual becomes excessively concerned and preoccupied by an imagined or minor flaw in their physical appearance that causes significant distress and impaired functioning as a result.

If you would like to find out more about BDD then you can visit this website:

http://www.bddfoundation.org

Hello again,

Would just like to say thank you to everyone who has taken part so far. We have 28 responses which is great and OCD-UK, OCD-Action, BEAT and Body Dysmorphic Disorder Foundation have all endorsed and posted the study!

If you haven't taken part yet and would like to do so, or for more info, then please refer to the original post and click the link :-)

Thanks again for your time.

Just to let everyone know, there is now a £30 ($50) amazon voucher prise draw if you take part/have taken part in the study. All you need to do is e-mail me at ttxom6@nottingham.ac.uk with your participant code (which you will create when you do the questionnaire) to be entered. If you have already done the questionnaire and can't remember your participant code it should be the initials of your forename and surname followed by the date and month that you were born :-)

PsychForums have updated my original post for me (thank you very much) and I now have 48 participants. However, I am looking at least 60 so would appreciate anymore responses. And don't forget to enter the prise draw if you do/have taken part by e-mailing me participant code! :-)

Hello again all,

Just to say that we have reached 70 participants and the questionnaire is now closed. Thank you to everyone who has taken part and the results will be passed on to PsychForums at a later date and it will be down to their discretion as to whether they will be posted on this site or not. If participants want the results themselves they can contact the researcher on: ttxom6@nottingham.ac.uk :-)
