In this post I am only referring to MALE porn actors.
I find this topic fascinating. I have been very curious about the psychology of male porn actors (particularly straight male porn actors and not as much the actors who are gay males, I guess because I am a heterosexual female), but I haven't been able to dig up much info from the few internet searches I've done. Can someone point me to some info? And I don't mean some messageboard postings by people with no degrees in Psychology who are just conjecturing/armchair-philosophizing. I want like academic journal articles that have been peer-reviewed, or published in reputable magazines. Studies done at accredited universities by people with PhD's, that sort of thing. I'm not interested in hearing what some 13-year-old kid's opinion is on the matter - I want statistics and facts, not opinions.
I have read that a lot of male porn stars have Antisocial Personality Disorder and are obsessed with fulfilling their sexual drives. But what about the actors who don't have APD? Like I read that Johnny Sins has a dog. This makes me suspect he doesn't have APD, because I read that people with APD will abandon a woman as soon as she is pregnant. In other words, these APD men don't want to have children, and they will only get into relationships with women as a means to have sex. I read that the majority of people with pets don't have kids, so my guess is that they are using the animals as a substitute for human children. Hence I suspect that people with APD rarely would adopt a pet (unless it was for the purpose of maiming it for the fun of torturing it. I doubt an APD'er would take the dog out for walks, as Johnny said on a messageboard.) Also, some straight male porn stars have human children and are married.
Why would they get into this business in the first place? What is the difference between a man who has a dream to become an astronaut or an upholsterer or a plumber?I know of one guy who said that when he was in high school he wanted to become a theoretical physicist. Aren't men in their teens brimming with testosterone? How come his dream isn't to break into the porn acting field? I'm shocked that ANY men want careers outside porn. I am a strong believer in evolutionary psychology, so I find it odd that men would pursue careers outside porn when porn is available. From my readings of people like Helen Fisher, Steven Pinker, David Buss, etc., I don't understand why less than 100% of men name professions other than porn as their career aspiration.
What about Borderline Personality Disorder? Is there a higher prevalence of this amongst male porn actors compared to men in non-porn professions?
I vaguely remember reading about a talk show that had as guests several men and women porn actors, and someone in the audience asked if any had been sexually abused as children, and all the men and women actors raised their hands! Aren't there some male porn actors who WEREN'T sexually abused?
Are there reasons other than APD for their drug addictions? Do they become addicted to drugs AFTER getting into porn, or do they get into porn to pay for the cost of their drugs because they aren't able to find higher paying work (ie. they don't have enough education to be a doctor or lawyer etc.)
From an evolutionary point of view, it is weird to me that those male porn actors would commit suicide. Again, is there a difference in the suicide numbers between the actors who are gay and the actors who are straight males? What are their reasons for committing suicide? I can understand it if they happened to contract a physical disease that progressed from manageable/not-that-painful into incurable/permanent and painful territory (AIDS, hepatitis, etc.), but what about those who don't have any physical illnesses, or who just have minor ones (like genital herpes)?
What is the difference in mental status between men who choose porn as a career and men who choose, say, theoretical physics as a career? Or is there any?
