I've had much the same problem. Between social encounters and community work, I often felt "peopled out." I labored hard to be agreeable among people even though I usually felt bored and crowded. I thought there was something deficient in my limited tolerance for people.
Then I asked a sculptor who often worked by herself, "Do you enjoy being alone!" She brightened. "I certainly do," she said, "ever since I realized there's nothing wrong with it."
Now I'm reclusive most of the time. I'm not defensive about it. When I'm asked, I reply: "I need a lot of time alone." My friends accept that, often feel the same way.
