the weirder, the better?

Postby EtherealStarlight » Sat Apr 23, 2011 11:03 pm

i was wondering if anyone else felt like i did about fantasy and unusual things....

*now that i've found a schizoid personality forum, i can't resist making OVER 9000 random threads*

for me, the more something is out of the ordinary, the better. i love fantasy, and things that don't really make sense, i guess... things that are ordinary and that you've been around your whole life seem really boring to me. you know, i'd much rather watch some crazy fantasy anime than a tv sitcom about some random family and the everyday crap that they go through....

i love surreal art and videos... i'm fascinated by things that don't make sense or are very strange. probably why i'm such a wapanese anime nerd, lots of animes don't make a whole lot of sense or are crazy fantasy stories.... i like real life things that are strange enough too....

is anyone else here sort of obsessed with the unusual? i know that lots of schizoids and a couple other groups will make up their own complicated fantasy worlds in their heads (heck yeah, i do that too! >:3 ), but i was curious if anyone else loved strange things?

so... surrealism, fantasy, unusual real things (other cultures, other religions, paradoxes, unusual plants and animals, abnormal psychology...), philosophy, rare phenomenon, etc. = awesomesauce? O.o

Please do. :D I'm bored and can't escape this place for another fortnight.

Nah, I actually like subtlety over the extraordinary. Kind of like seeing the hidden treasures in the mundane.
I like serious art house or indie movies with no special effects, and low-budget music recordings.
I like everyday people’s stories.
I hate most fantasy fiction unless it comes from my own imagination, or is in a computer game where I get to kill stuff and collect treasure.

But yeah, I totally dislike non-animated sit-coms. They aren't funny to me.
I'd rather watch anime any day because I prefer looking at drawings to human actors.
No diagnosis, lots of opinions, and a bunch of issues that I haven't quite figured out.

Or maybe not. I'm not diagnosed with anything. So I may be the odd one out. One example does not a rule make.

I think it makes sense that fantasy may appeal to schizoids...part of the whole disconnect from reality perhaps?

yes to weird. yes to bizzare, surreal, strange, inconguent juxtaposed nonsense. the more uncomfortable and confused it makes others feel the more i like it.

i just found this forum recently too, but i've been hesitant about posting my 9000+ posts.

Yes please don't be afraid to post 9000 random things here if you feel like it. This forum could do with some light hearted topics over all the serious threads here. :P

I guess I would put myself in your category but not to such an extent. :)

I love fantasy novels and fantasy rpg games. I like watching Anime too, it has completely ruined tv for me but there are a few Sci-fi and fantasy shows that I download.

And I do find myself searching for abnormal and unusual things on the web when it interests me.

Uhhh....sort of? I don't think I like weird for weird's sake, but I do tend to like what I like regardless of popularity. And I do tend to like the novel, and gravitate towards things with cult followings, and things with a strong sense of style that other people might find "weird", or "quirky"

Fictionally, I tend to like sci-fi and mystery, and sometimes a little fantasy, but I'm just as likely to hate fantasy as like it. It has to have a pretty strong, orderly concept. I like authors with really distinctive writing styles the best. I love Douglas Adams, Lemony Snicket, Philip K. Dick, some Gaiman, some Bradbury. I don't think these are necessarily weird, but they're not popular among my friends and family.

TV is pretty well the same; lots of cult sci-fi/fantasy, some cartoons, probably an indecent amount of stuff with a romantic undercurrent. Lost, Battlestar Galactica (the reboot), Star Trek, Alias, The X-files, Futurama, Veronica Mars, Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me, ...procedurals when there's nothing on, and usually something soapy and romantic -- not for the scandals and triangles, I just like watching people fall in ideal, fictional love. Castle is my romantic show of right now. Luckily, it has a mystery backdrop, but I used to even watch soap operas.

Movies -- I'm a really picky movie watcher. I will watch old Mel Brooks movies over and over though. Everything else is usually an adaptation of a book I like.

Music - Mostly 'indie' bands of various styles (pop-rock, alt-country, brit-rock, new-wave inspired, soul), and singer-songwriters. The New Pornographers, Florence + the Machine, The Decemberists, the Black Keys, the Dears, Travis, Death Cab For Cutie, the Stars...

Art: I like really graphic stuff. Shepard Fairey, MC Escher, Lawren Harris, old Russian propaganda posters, old travel posters, Asian brush art, some of the surrealists, Kandinsky (but not the one with the circles)

No anime for me. I've seen some good anime movies, but It's not really my thing.

If you like weird perhaps you might like this book, "How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe”. Below please find a book reveiw. I think the protagonist and his father are both schizoids. The main flaw is that ending is points toward "normality" withot telling you how to get there.

I believe that enjoyment from perceiving the weird may relate to the psychological trait, ''novelty seeking'. Seeking to stimulate the brain in new novel ways.

Do you have the urge to experiment with psychedelics?

Both seem to be a common schizo trait, not sure if this is related.
I never gave anybody hell! I just told the truth and they thought it was hell.

@.@ oh, so a lot of you do like unusual stuff!

i've just heard that lots of schizoids (myself included) make up elaborate fantasy worlds and work on them all the time... and i was wondering if many people on here were like me and love things that are unusual or don't make much sense....

and i'd be way too scared to actually try illegal drugs, though i'd be interested to see what would happen. i like looking at teh weirdishness from a distance, you know? XD
