Another example of just using "Schizoid." Bad 80's movie, but with "Psycho" already taken I guess this was the next catchy phrase.

Why can't these people inform themselves properly before chosing a name for a movie? It's the same with the (mis)use of the word "schizophrenia". A lot of people still think that schizophrenic refers to multiple personalities in one individual.

It seems that in all those examples, they use definition #3:
schiz·oid (skĭt'soid')
adj.
1. Of, relating to, or having a personality disorder marked by extreme shyness, flat affect, reclusiveness, discomfort with others, and an inability to form close relationships.
2. Of, relating to, or suggestive of schizophrenia. No longer in scientific use.
3. Informal Relating to or characterized by the coexistence of disparate or antagonistic elements: "This schizoid town is part resort, part sardine cannery" (Jean Anderson).

n. A schizoid person.

Sad... I didn't know that "schizoid" used in that context actually had a dictionary definition... since it really has nothing to do with the "official" 1st definition. In that case they meant that the kid was "schizoid" because he looked friendly but was violent (therefore had disparate elements).

Nor did I. I think it is time we rename this disorder. Any ideas? Something less sexy and more true. After all I think the term "Schizoid" is why I keep my diagnosis to myself. Last thing I need people to think is that I am a crazy killer or god forbid an arch enemy to spider man.

Do you think "Schizoid" is the reason that so many try to "fit" them selves into this disorder? Why is it that one of the most boring Pd's is also considered one of the most interesting? Why would a person ever want this?

Thank you,

Harris

I don't think any of the definitions apply to the person at the center of this story. Not schizoid, didn't appear to be schizophrenic.
There were no disparate or antagonistic elements. They knew this kid was violent and unstable beforehand, he wasn't hiding it under a nice exterior.
The article wrote:was voted the pupil "most likely to start World War III" by fellow students at the middle school he left last year.

This seems to be a misuse of the word schizoid because it sounds craaAAAAzyy! I'm guessing they were using it to indicate he was socially isolated - split from society. I think a better term would be psychopath or antisocial. This article is also from 1998, the word probably changed it's meaning considerably since then.

More like a "minor irritant" to spiderman, which is probably worse, they canned him pretty quick.
Sorry my my imagination must be broke, I can't think of any good names. Maybe someone should brush up on their greek or latin?
