from what I've been reading I've seen it described as a defense mechanism. why stress out over something you don't have to feel? a lot of the time I feel like I just don't let myself have emotions because I think they're just... a waste.
for a while it was nice, but it's time to say bye.

the subconscious doesn't have a choice in the matter. surely the reason people compartmentalize distressing experiences is because they know they do feel them, they just separate them in an attempt to protect the ego?

in that respect saying you don't have to feel something is redundant, because you'll be reflecting on it later if you don't repress it entirely, which tends to lead to other problems like crazy gamer rage.

Can't function if I have them. I learned as a kid that to suppress my emotions meant I could act the way I was supposed to.

I read somewhere it's because they were overemotional when children and later develop the avoiding as a self-defense. Also, strong emotions tend up to inspire you to make stupid decisions or inmoral acts.
