According to this:
http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the ... -mentalityMost, if not all, humans desire to feel superior to others. How does that match your experience?
I've read elsewhere, though this appears more questionable, that one of the primary evolutionary purposes of social interaction is status competition and a need to establish which primate is "higher" than the other. We are, therefore, constantly fighting for dominance, at least subconsciously, even in seemingly casual social situations. I don't how much weight to put in this, though. I definitely don't want to see it that way.

Hierarchy as a construction is not about superiority, its about survival. For example there are animal groups with hierarchy and without hierarchy. If we take the wolf pack for example, hierarchy in the group has the function of keeping the group stable. If a wolf of the group catches a prey, then everyone will take turn eating without any conflict. although if there was no hierarchy they would fight over the food and the result would be: energy lost, increased amount of conflict, and possible damage. That wouldn´t be good for the group nor the individual.
So hierarchy keeps the group stable and the niche keeps the species alive.
Although our society's immense struggle for power should not be confused with the actual function of hierarchy. In human society, hierarchy has more to do with the emotional fulfilment of power rather than simply the necessity of stability.
That´s why people want loads of sh*t in their big fat house.

Hierarchies' primary purpose may not be establishing superiority, but the article definitely states that most of us desire this superiority, and use status marks to express it.
