Animals - Do you have any?

Postby awakenow » Thu Jun 28, 2012 10:05 am

I'm wondering if any of you have pets or a love of animals. Are you able to actually care about your pets? This isn't to say they don't sometimes get a bit of the raging (not saying anyone is abusing their animal here - just saying the reaction to them misbehaving may be a bit stronger than is deserved), but in general do you love your pets, or maybe someone else's pet?

I love all animals and volunteer at an animal shelter when I'm in the right state of mind.

I have a dog, three cats and a hamster and recently one of the dogs at my mums house (I used to live with her part time a few years ago) had a stroke and had to be put down. It was the worst feeling ever - the same as when I came back from holiday as a 15yr old and found out the dog we had then had collapsed and had to be put to sleep. It hurts more to lose my animal companions than those in my family tbh.

All my animals are rescues.

I would never intentionally hurt an animal, and feel guilty when I step on a snail or any other creepy crawly for that matter. I have lashed out at my dog once because I was in a really bad mood and I started crying because of me lashing out at him and telling him sorry, lots. Every time I have to leave him in the cage when I go out (he chews up things) I tell him I love him. He may not understand it but he and all my other animal companions mean the world to me. They are partly the reason I do not go through with suicide attempts and let my true misanthropic feelings get the better of me.

Fengxian, thank you. I too have many rescues. I've found many narcs are very big animal lovers. I've wondered if it's because they don't need to put on any acts for an animal and still are fully accepted. Also, are the animals an outlet for emotions narcs are unable to experience with people - love, caring, sympathy, etc.

About the rescues - perhaps it's a desire to rescue something from a terrible situation - something no one did/can do for them. After all, narcs tend to want what the world views as 'the best' of everything, and a mutt from the pound isn't that, yet narcs willingly take these poor animals in and shower them with love.

ADDED: On my last point, yes, there is the possibility that the narc wants to be viewed as a very caring person so they take in a rescue, but the way these animals are treated and adored leads me to believe this isn't the case. The animals aren't used as props like some of the poor toy dogs we see carried in shopping bags are used as. Narcs seem to genuinely care deeply for these animals.

I have an old dog and some goats. The goats get more attention because their personalities are a bit more out there. I like some animals, not all.

I haven't got any animals, but I do pick live worms up off the pavement, and put them back on the grass. Where are they going, anyway?

I have a dog. A hermit crab. (Was crabs. His buddy recently passed away.) And a cat.

The cat wasn't suppose to be. She was a stray kitten that had been attacked on her leg by a raccoon or something. She was terrified of people. Wouldn't even begin to let you get close. I started putting food out for her in the backyard. One night I actually got to see the raccoons getting into the food so I moved it closer to the house. Then at night I would lay on the driveway and would talk to her. This became a nightly ritual.

Long story short. Eventually we built a relationship. Ended up taking her in to be spayed. It was free. Thought she would leave after she recovered. She never did.

Now she sits next to me in the evenings on my porch swing. Or sometimes I will lay in the driveway and her next to me.

Funny thing is. I never liked cats.

I like her though.

I used to have a cat for about a decade. It annoyed me most of the time, as it did not seem to understand to leave me alone and only come out for attention when I desired.

It disappeared one day and I never really thought about it again. Until today.
