Because it boosts their ego and makes them feel better about themselves.

N's belittle people because deep, deep down under all the egotistical rubbish, they are very, very insecure people and putting someone down makes them feel so much better than anyone else.

I don't know about bipolar people doing it. I think EVERYONE makes fun of people to SOME extent at some point or another, probably via bitching about someone with friends etc... who knows why, maybe because we're feeling low, maybe simply because we find something funny, maybe because it's someone who hurt us and bitching or making fun of them releases the anger we feel, maybe we feel intimidated or threatened by a person, maybe we're jealous of them etc.... but an N is something different, it's relentless, with an N it is always so much more devaluing and harsh, more malicious and designed to totally floor a person. The N will outright tell you that stuff to your face and LOVE to watch you as you crumble or cry.

My ex NPD never stopped taking the p##s out of others, he could be very funny singling out peoples quirks and mimicking them. In small doses its OK, and he never went too far with people bigger than him hes not that stupid.
BUT
He was however a nightmare to live with, constantly ridiculing, belittling, spiteful, a 'shredder' of others.
He would pick me to pieces endlessly, but being a narc if I retaliated in any way no matter how mildly guess what? NARC RAGE how dare I, indignation, anger, aggression even violence so great was his narcissistic injury.
Why did he do it, in his case I think it was because he was insecure, he had never matured into a adult he was, and always will be a spoilt, greedy, demanding, spiteful, self absorbed toddler.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
