Difference between an Egomaniac and a Narc?

Postby Cypheran » Mon Jun 01, 2009 4:36 pm

From what i have seen i thought id come up with this topic since i feel it rellates in some ways, but i like to know if someone can actually put an actual comaprison to the two types.

This is not meant to offend in any way, im simply trying to understand the fundamentals between the two types in which they could possibly be mistaken?

Well the description of an egomanaic is: conceited, self-centered person: egocentric , egoist , egotist , narcissist . Informal swellhead.

NPD:
* perception and interpretation of the self and other people
* intensity and duration of feelings and their appropriateness to situations
* relationships with others
* ability to control impulses
* He or she has a grandiose sense of self-importance (exaggerates accomplishments and demands to be considered superior without real evidence of achievement).
* He or she lives in a dream world of exceptional success, power, beauty, genius, or "perfect" love.
* He or she thinks of him- or herself as "special" or privileged, and that he or she can only be understood by other special or high-status people.
* He or she demands excessive amounts of praise or admiration from others.
* He or she feels entitled to automatic deference, compliance, or favorable treatment from others.
* He or she is exploitative towards others and takes advantage of them.
* He or she lacks empathy and does not recognize or identify with others' feelings.
* He or she is frequently envious of others or thinks that they are envious of him or her.
* He or she "has an attitude" or frequently acts in haughty or arrogant ways.

I think they are a lot alike but I think they are a bit different?

What do you guys think ?

perhaps it's the narcissist's need for narcissistic supply that separates them.

A psychopath tends to be an egomaniac.

They think highly of themselves but don't care what others think, unlike the narcissist who wants others to admire and worship them.

Well, I am uncertain if this is correct, but egomaniacs do not necessarily lack empathy for others do they?

Egomaniac isn't a clinical diagnosis and doesn't have as precise of a meaning. It's like asking what's the difference between schizophrenic and crazy.

The schizo hears the voices, the crazy see's the voices.

But crazy and egomaniac aren't the same when you look at it.

Egomaniac could be Megalomania and that is comparable to NPD, where as crazy is just a layman's term for any person with some degree of psychopathology.
