She didn't survive middle age unfortunately. Things do get marginally better usually from our mid 40s onward.

Alex wears a technicolour dream coat for a codependent Covert N, anyway. His ego defences got the better of him earlier this year after harassment from a particularly manic borderline. No Ns in the World; no music!

Fragile narcissism was recognised as far back as the 1930s, I believe. We are paranoid magical thinkers. Our false selves are polite and self effacing and often quite silly. We are perfectionistic workaholics and expect the same standards from others. If we are in a position of authority over you, it's best if you can live up to our standards. We look down on those who don't behave as well as we do. We feel like willow the wisps. There is no wolf inside of me Ross. There is nothing inside of me. In my world there is only me. I'm a counter dependant variety of FN. I like to think I can wrap other Ns around my little finger! Many of our females waste their lives away with men who are controlling and can't keep their focus fixed on them for more than 5 minutes. They are the women who love too much. We often give ourselves away with glib remarks. We believe in love! We just can't love. We can become infactuated with and idolise a partner. In middle age we can hold our focus on our partner for life if needs be. We are nostalgic for our traumatised childhoods. We know what we are from an early age. We just don't know who we are. We often read psychology books starting in our early 20s. In swinging sixties London there was a fad for keeping Northern strays as trophy friends. No Covert Ns in the World; no cult DVD sales! :)

In my most self-reflective moments, I find that Disturbed's "Decadence" perfectly encapsulates this abiding emptiness I feel when stripped of my acquisitive nature and lust for power. I discovered this song exactly ten years ago, but it's eerie how the lyrics have since taken on a life of their own during that decade. A self-fulfilling prophecy, I suppose.

Disturbed - Decadence
Say! Yes, they know that you’ve hurt yourself another time
Don’t they know that you’re full of pain already?
Yes, they know that you’ve hurt yourself another time
Decadence isn’t easy, is it?
Yes, they know that you’ve hurt yourself another time
Don’t they know that you’re full of pain already?
Yes, they know that you’ve hurt yourself another time
Decadence isn’t easy…

Then you slowly recall all your mind
Why your soul’s gone cold, and all hope has run dry
Dead inside!
Never enough to forget that you’re one of the lonely
Slowly recall all your mind

Say, yes they know that you’ve hurt yourself another time
Don’t they know that you’re full of pain already?
Yes, they know that you’ve hurt yourself another time
Decadence isn’t easy, is it?
Yes, they know that you’ve hurt yourself another time
Don’t they know that you’re full of pain already?
Yes, they know that you’ve hurt yourself another time
Decadence isn’t easy…

Then you slowly recall all your mind
Why your soul’s gone cold, and all hope has run dry
Dead inside!
Never enough to forget that you’re one of the lonely
Slowly recall all your mind

If I scare you now, don’t run from me!
I’ve been hiding my pain, you see
Said if I scare you now, don’t run from me!
I’ve been hiding my pain, you see…

Slowly recall all your mind
Why your soul’s gone cold, and all hope has run dry
Dead inside!
Never enough to forget that you’re one of the lonely
Slowly recall all your mind…
You slowly recall all your mind

Say, yes they know that you’ve hurt yourself another time
Don’t they know that you’re full of pain already?
Yes, they know that you’ve hurt yourself another time
Decadence isn’t easy, is it?

This sounds like a song for a partner/spouse of an N:

The The - December Sunlight

The early morning sun lit up her room
But it wasn't just a change in the weather
She'd read it in her stars and now she felt it in her heart
Life was gonna start getting better
And there was a time when she would pray
That each teardrop that rolled down her face
Would represent a day of pain for him
But now she's changing the way she feels
About wasting her time & tears

Cried out, cried out, cried out
Cried out, cried out, cried out

And all the tricks and all the lies
He tried to pull over her eyes
Kept running through her mind
She looks back in disbelief
In confusion and in grief
At what his secrecy was revealing
You can scream into your pillow
You can pray into the night
But you can't switch off your feelings
Like you'd switch out a light
But she's changing the way she feels
About wasting her time and tears

Cried out, cried out, cried out
Cried out, cried out, cried out

And now these winter skies
Turn blue and bright
And she feels alive
And wants to drink every kiss
Make up for what she's missed
And wipe him out of her mind
Some day he'll have to grow up
And come clean
And listen to the screams
Of his own conscience

Cry out, cry out, cry out

...And she'll not hear a sound
I never seen you looking so bad my funky one / You tell me that your superfine mind has come undone (Steely Dan, Any Major Dude)

This one sounds like it describes a narcissist:

The View - Face For Radio (Lyrics)

You have a face for the radio,
But I know you'd like to see it in a show,
Claiming to be the next best everything,
Which way will you go?
You're a little smarter than most of us,
You run so fast sometimes it's hard to see you for dust,
Finding some time for you, it tortures me,
Which way will you go?
Wages on a Friday,
Spent on a Saturday,
Lend me a fiver,
Won't do that again,
Oh your trust is not to strong.
Your arrogance in a bag,
Won't spare you a #######1 [British for "cigarette"],
Superstar wannabe,
Says it comes naturally,
Cemented in your own feeble way,
He watches trainspotting, fifteen times a week,
Thinking it's making him oh so unique,
PC on summer nights and football in the rain,
Doesn't matter how far he is,
He always has money for the train,
Nothing against you, love in my heart,
You're really a nice lad, I've known it from the start,
Your conscience in eager, to know where you lie,
Pushing your limits, give it up and remember you can cry.
Wages on a Friday,
Spent on a Saturday,
Lend me a tenner,
Won't do that again,
Oh your trust is not to strong.
You're arrogance in a bag,
Won't spare you a #######1 [British for "cigarette"],
Superstar wannabe,
Says it comes naturally,
In your own feeble way.
I never seen you looking so bad my funky one / You tell me that your superfine mind has come undone (Steely Dan, Any Major Dude)

Wages on Friday, spent on a Saturday. ...sounds like the N I know.

He spends all of his money very quickly on eating drinking and going out...pleasures...and yet has tatty old clothes and second hand gadgets, his bedroom is a mess.

This song reminds me of narcissism. It could be describing a female N:
