Is this the co-worker that you became involved with, piercett? haven't you had a very longstanding relationship with someone that you suspect may be narcissistic? is the relationship/friendship still being maintained?
Regardless... your example here supports what I said earlier. Information on narcissism (or any mental disorder for that matter) only really becomes pertinent to young women (if we want to stay with that characterization of those you seek to warn and protect - the young innocent naive sweet little girls) when they've had a bit of relevant experience.
Otherwise, it just is relegated to "Well, that happens to other people; not me", or "I'm too savvy to have that happen to me", or "Gosh, you see bogeymen everywhere, don't you?"... it is dismissed as not being relevant to their own life.
We, as parents or even just concerned citizens, can't be running around yelling
"Narcissist. Narcissist. Look out!", now can we? LOL.
Plus, I think that people are being labelled as 'Narcissists' way too frequently these days anyway.
It's becoming the mental health disease/disorder dejour. Many who are labelled as NPD are not.
We don't need to stick a label on them so readily... they may just be liars, or gamers, or players, or 'bad boys/girls', or noncommitters, or may just be content to have a really superficial relationship even if they promise more, or other flavors of despicable heartbreakers... but that doesn't make them NPD.
I think we'd be wise to warn our daughters (and sisters/mothers/girlfriends/grandmothers and all the male equivalents of these - warnings for everyone!) that shysters exist. Liars and conmen/conwomen exist. People who want to use you and use what you got exist. Sometimes it comes via someone who proclaims to love you... really well and really fast. And sometimes it comes via an email from Nigeria - lol.
Be wise and Beware.
That's good advice, period.
