Bipolar or not?

Postby anonymous1992 » Sun Feb 07, 2010 6:49 pm

I'm 17 years old and for the last two years I've been having mood swings. I go from really depressed to unusaly upbeat and energetic. I researched bipolar and I can relate to a lot of the symptoms although I've never bought anything I couldn't afford or cheated on my boyfriend while I've been in a 'good' mood.
When I'm in a 'good' mood I don't get tired, I have loads of energy, feel happy no matter what's going on in my life, I get very exciting by things only a child would find excitable, I have racing thoughts, I'm easily distracted, find it hard to concentrate.
When I'm in a 'bad' mood I find it extremely hard to get out of bed, I get angry, I have no interest in things I usually enjoy, I'm always tired, my memory is awful (this is all the time) my appetite changes.
My moods usually change numerous times a day and it's usually depressed/angry and stable moods I'm in, the 'good' moods don't happen as often.
Among these I also get very disturbing images and thoughts in my head, I don't know where these images/thoughts come from.

Hi,

There are no doctors here but to me it soumds like you could have bipolar. Your best option is to just go to your docor if you want to get a diagnosis based on these symptoms. I believe that sometimes a person can appear to be bipolar, but that it's actually a 'pseudo' bipolar that is due to OCD. This is difficult to explain right now, but basically the rituals that a person follows in OCD are such that they go through cycles of feeling happy and sad. However, your behaviour (that you've mentioned here) doesn't seem to be tied up with OCD, which again brings me back to the notion that - yes - you might have Bipolar.

Would you feel confident enough to go to your local doctor?

I went to my doctors in October they said it was normal teenage hormones but I inisted on a mental health assessment which I had on the 5th feb and that was a terrible assesment. I told him everything I posted on here but in more detail and he said there was nothing wrong with me. I'm going back to the doctors on Friday to request another assessment.

Geez, I go through this once a month and can't stand it, it must be absolutely horrible to go through this every day. I have raised teens, and this is not normal teen behavior. Go get a second opinion.

Good for you. Problems are problems, irrespective of what age you are. Your doctor's passing your problems off as mere 'teenage' problems is rather unprofessional I feel (if that is indeed what he/she did). You might have to make a stronger case for yourself next time. Go prepared - I mean, know what symptoms you have exactly that agree with the criteria for bipolar - and mention these to him/her.
