Vitamins for anxiety, depression, irritability?

Postby 2+2=5 » Wed Oct 14, 2009 1:53 pm

I can't afford medication or even a doctor visit to ask about these vitamins. I currently take the b complex, omega 3, and sam-e. I still feel the the irritability, depression, and anxiety though. Which of the other ones should I start taking? Do some have basically the same function, making some unnecessary? Which would be best to take in addition to the first three? I'm thinking about not taking the sam-e anymore.

B-Complex with added vitamin C and E
Omega 3 fish oil
Sam-e
Magnesium
Selenium
Zinc
Vitamin D
5 htp
Ginkgo Biloba

Thanks guys

I'd talk to your doctor before taking a whole bunch of vitamins and supplements like that...

Just having a good multi vitamin will have a good chunk of all you need daily, but it won't help anxiety... medication does not get rid of anxiety, only helps with symptoms, as for depression, I've heard of Sam-e, though i'd not be comfortable in taking it.

Again i'd discuss it with your doctor.

I'm currently taking vitamin B6, which will help you stay calm.

I would recommend St Johns Wort - it really is a great natural pick-me-up. It does interact wtih certain medicines, so read accompanying literature carefully - but it really helps me

I'd try each one alone for 1-2 weeks. watch for the effects and compare to when on nothing. This is what homeopathy medicine suggests. This way you don't end up taking a bunch of extra stuff that isn't helping the cause. keep a vitamin journal (a suggestion i should take myself...)

I hope you the best.

Don't lose the B complex - such a good nervous system supporter. . watch for any warnings on the labels though. Selenium is toxic in high doses so adhere to the advised dose and do not exceed it. Bananas, high grain foods, nuts, fish are all good sources of vitamins - the first three have the B vits and fish has omega 3,. . .diet can make a big difference.

I'm on (too many) drugs for anx, depr., and trauma. I saw a naturopath dr. (who- by the way, is an actual DOCTOR-) who also was an unbelievable fortune to see, which I cannot afford to see again.

She recommended (she said it wouldn't affect any psych. drugs I'm on)- Omega 3, B-complex AS WELL AS- B6 (which is really important). It's great to take a good multi-vitamin as well, but this is just not enough B vits. for people with psych. problems. B's are really help with stress, an over-stressed out central nervous system, etc.

(And before I start taking stuff, I will call or see the pharmacist to check it will them. They know ALOT. Often they know more than the Drs. )

I just started taking the above vits.
Hopeful.
And good luck to you.
