this is a great post, sometimes I use this method when I'm having an anxiety attack, I've been able to convince myself that certain things, even though small, will help to relieve my attack and it works for me a lot of the time so it's nice to know that I'm not crazy lol

The power of the mind really is astonishing. Just look at monks who're able to control heartbeat or even completely eliminate pain.

Placebo meds are based on this: they make you believe that you've been given some powerful medicine and you feel better, when it was just water.

After all, pain is all in the mind: you could induce harsh pains even without damaging someone's body but just playing with his mind.

Everything worsens when you realize this and get hopeless. It's true that we shouldn't know some things.

When I was in the army I was part of a RECON team and we trained very hard. We would say to eachother for support, "Your body can do it, it's your mind that is weak." I don't know why but this helped us get through some nasty stuff.

7 years late, but, great post. it is truly amazing what we can achieve based on what we perceive. it poses the question...... where does it end? how far can we really go with reality based on our minds creation?

This is the same in buddhist lit, and the same as in the allegory of the cave by plato, both used to describe how we think we perceive the world is absolute truth and reality, but if we shine more light on the subject, that speckled snake turns into a rope, those shadows on the wall turn out to be mere outlines of more whole, complete objects that have their existence independent of playing their form on the wall of the cave. In both instances, the one who sees more clearly and tries to tell the others they're wrong is considered either crazy or stupid.

My pet theory was that every person really lives in their own world, and for the last 8-10 years, the more I've seen of people and scientific research and phil introspection on the subject, the more it seems to fit.
