Changing eye colour

Postby bourbon » Tue Jun 18, 2013 12:22 pm

So I'm wondering what your opinions are on this: do you believe/do you experience you eye colour changing between alters? How do you explain it?

My co-therapist confirmed something that I have known for a long time. My eye colour changes quite significantly. She is a DID specialist of sorts and reckons that I can scrap my theory of: "it just seems to change with my mood" and instead claim that it changes with what alters are out/close in the body.

I mentioned this to my main therapist who said a.) she hasn't noticed because we are rubbish at eye contact with her, all of us and b.) she doesn't believe eye colour actually changes in and of itself. She believes that toxicity levels in the liver or something can change which can change the colours of the eyes.

What do you all think?

I haven't asked my T this, but lots of people throughout my life have mentioned this. I used to think that the color of my eyes must just be prone to changing, but that doesn't make sense because I have a sibling with the same eye color and theirs never change "due to the light" or "what they're wearing" or what have you.

That's really interesting Bourbon. Our system had an experience where Birch fronted at one point in front of a few people (to protect us) and a friend who was also there mentioned that our eyes got noticeably darker. That was before we knew we had DID.
After remembering that incident, we shrugged it off as bull because to us it didn't seem plausible, but it actually may be.

Thank you for sharing your experience, it's given us a bit more to think about for sure.

Mine have always changed. Sometimes deep blue, sometimes green. I always insisted they were green all the time because I liked it better :) I dont know if this has anything to with DID or is just how my eyes are. I think the difference is too big for it to be caused by the light, but who knows.

do you experience you eye colour changing between alters?

Yup. Certain alters have blue eyes, green eyes, brown eyes, grey-ish eyes.

It doesn't matter what mood we're in - the colour depends on the alter and sometimes who is very close.

I guess what I'm actually asking is do you think its the colour of the eye that is changing per se or "just" some other biochemical change within the body?

It took us a while to figure this out, but there seems to be two main things that effect our eye color.

1. Surrounding colors. On a stormy day, my eyes look steel blue. If I wear purple, it brings the green out in my eyes. If I'm wearing black, they seem more hazil.

2. Moisture. This can be linked to mood and physicalities. If my eyes are wet from crying, they are very bright green. If my eyes are just a little moist from being sad for a few days, they are dark green. If I'm dehydrated because I've been undereating and drinking, they are more of an amber to brown color.

Hope that helps.

I was just going to proclaim that this has to do with blood flow and cite a friend of mine as an example but then I remembered that I am pretty certain that friend is a system too.. so doh. That friend's eye colour changes quite significantly in certain situations

No colour changes for me that I am aware of but the physicality of this sort of stuff is so darn fascinating :)

I have an undefined eye color... Depending on the light it's blue, grey, green... But probably it's also related on the mood or the alter in control because some times people have said that in the same place I can have two different eye colors in two different days but in the same place.
