Antidepressant induced Cyclothymia?

Postby Mordac » Thu Jul 31, 2008 10:32 am

Hey people, I'm a newbie here.
I'm 19, and I've suffered from OCD and other anxiety disorders for most of my life. Last year, I finally decided to seek medical help, and I've been put on antidepressants, which helped immensely. Right now, I'm only taking Anafranil (Clomipramine), a tricyclic.
The thing is, having never suffered from mood disorders before, thankfully, I seem to find myself suffering from odd mood swings, sometimes happing over the course of a single day, where at one time I feel like I am at the top of the world and without a care, and a few hours after I can be almost crying. I have no idea what to make of it, I once told my psychiatrist about it but he didn't seem to make much of it. Anyone has any thoughts they can offer?

Hey,

I thought that anti-depressants were supposed to 'neutralise' a person's moods, so, it's strange that your moods are still so varied. They aren't the most powerful at 'neutralising' them though: That honour belongs to the class of drugs known as mood stabilisers.

I'm puzzled though: Why did you post in this (Cyclothymia) forum? - You said that you were diagnosed with OCD and Anxiety. Anafranil is typically given for treating OCD and Anxiety, but it wouldn't be given for Cyclothymia.

Thanks for answering,
As far as I know, antidepressants can sometimes induce mood changes they aren't supposed to--Zoloft, for instance is notorious for causing mania.
I posted it in the cyclothymia forum because I thought the mood swings I am experiencing resemble cyclothymia to a degree, albeit induced by anti-depressants, not natural, thankfully. If you think I should change it, then let me know, though.

You're welcome, Mordac, and I think that you should definately talk again to your doctor about changing the medication. I mean, if you genuinely don't feel too great on Anafranil, then you must mention this to your doctor once more. What exactly did he (your doctor/psychiatrist) say about it the last time?
