The Riddle of This Forum

Postby SmileXx » Wed Jan 13, 2010 1:07 am

If a liar tells you that they're lying, can you believe them?

A group of liars converge on a forum and talk about how they lie... are they lying about what they're saying they're lying about?

Sorry. I love toying with words... especially the word lie... so many questions you can make...

Actually, this is also present in mathematics too (it's called Gödel's incompleteness theorem) and what you said about a liar telling you that he's lying and whether or not you can believe him, is often used to express Gödel's theorem in a simplified way, though it's formulated a bit differently.... it goes like that

If all Sumerians are liars and a Sumerian comes up to you claiming he told you a true story, will you believe him or not knowing that all Sumerians are liars?

Also, what you wrote is very strongly related to the "liar's paradox" and is actually an example out of it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liar_paradox
