I've been thinking a lot about my life as a liar, recently, because it's getting me into a lot of trouble with my wife.
When I was a kid, I remember at least two occasions when I told my parents obvious lies-- "No, I didn't do XYZ" and there were no consequences for me. I think that contributed to the problem I have now - lying as a strategy for avoiding trouble or staying out of conflict.
Did other people have similar experiences?

For me it was always about staying out of trouble or just to get what I wanted. It got to the point that I began the lying days in advance to manipulate my parents to get what I wanted.
I've done the same things in both of my marriages, so bad that I'm on thin ice with my wife. We just celebrated our 20th anniversary yesterday in Vegas, I planned it to be special, thankfully everything went according to plan.
She told me at dinner on Sunday that if I hadn't planned anything we were done. And I didn't lie to her once!

Jim - congratulations on your 20th, and on getting through the stress without resorting to any lies. An accomplishment.
When you lied as a kid, did you ever get caught? What were the consequences? I think that if my parents had addressed my lying, I might not be so willing to lie now.

Thanks Henry it was a good time. And no lying.
Ohh I got caught plenty of times. I was usually able to lie my way out of it. Sometimes I wasn't so lucky and I'd get grounded.
