I think my wife is bulimic

Postby yearone » Sat Oct 31, 2009 1:36 am

I have a 35 year old wife who I think may be suffering from bulimia. I need to be sure before I confront her and thought maybe I'd get some advice.

She eats large amounts of food in one sitting (more than I do, sometimes she finishes my sandwiches or fries and stuff if we eat out), she usually goes to the bathroom 10 or 15 minutes after eating and "takes a bath".

With the water running and the exhaust fan on I can still hear her heaving. Sometimes this is 2 to 3 times a day.

Sometimes afterwards, I'll ask her if she's ok, and she'll say she's not feeling good, sick to her stomach or whatever. I think this may have been going on for some time because she's been suffering from headaches and migrains daily for about 6 months or more. When I don't ask her about being sick it's like she never was and she's feeling fine, not acting sick at all. She takes all kinds of vitimans as well.

she has dropped I think 2 pants sizes...she is now a size 2. As far as her hair falling out, that's been going on since shes been on birth control pills, that's normal....the vitamins, those probably keep it from falling out more.

She weights herself multiple times during the day as well, which I suppose is another sign. First thing in the morning after she pees, then immediately after every "purge" and again before bed time....(I know this because we have a digital scale that is activated by either tapping your foot on top or just steping on the edge of it and bumping it on the floor--so I hear the scale every time)

When she goes to shower or take a bath, the water will run for a long time before I actually hear her get in. I guess I'd better get ready for world war 3 because she's pretty moody and confrontational lately. We just got into an arguement yesterday about how long it took me to drop off a prescription after work. Things are just going down hill lately.

Thanks for any help.

hi yearone
this is a tricky one!
some of what you are saying definately describes bulimia, the scales, purging and eating excessive amounts in one go but bulimics dont usually loose much weight. they usually stay round about the same or within 5% of their body weight either way.
sometimes its such a relief to have someone who cares about you show so much concern, and be wanting to help, but she may already have an idea that she has an eating disorder and be really embaraced about it.
i wouldnt just come out and say it as you could be wrong, id sugest saying that you are really concerned about the hair loss, weight loss and the other physical things you have noticed, (dont mention purging or repeatedly getting weighed as this could be taken wrongly and she ll think your checking up on her) sugest a check up with the doctor and take it from there.
she is really lucky to have someone who cares, good luck

i don't know where to go from here. those are all the signs that she is bulimic because those are the exact things i am doing. things with me have gotten to the point that i hide in other areas of the house to try and distract my husband of becoming suspicious. well he found and area that i had been hiding my puke. tonight he confronted me once again and i told him the truth. he is pissed at me. we have not talked and i am lost and have no idea what to do. he doesn't trust that anything i say is the truth because i have denied what was the truth all along. this may be something that ur wife is trying to avoid. all i can say that is if you confront her, don't be mad cuz it makes us feel like a disgusting person. let her know that you are there for her.

Your wife may very well be bulimic. "Taking a shower" right after eating is what I normally do and have been doing since I started with my whole disorder. Has she been complaining about her teeth lately or have u noticed a change in them? You're right to be concerned about her. I've been bulimic since the age of 18 and I'm 25 now. In that time I have lost 2 teeth and I had to have laser surgery for a torn retina... so it's a good idea to try and talk to her about it, because things can get worse fast, and i say worse because things are already bad and you know it. I hope you guys can get her the help that she needs.
