filed for disability

Postby mommy_dearest » Fri Sep 24, 2010 2:51 pm

Just wondering if anyone has ever filed for disability benefits for their BPD. if so, were you approved? If not, what were the reasons? I just applied. I'm never going to feel good about being in public, I've developed a weird phobia of being in a car, so I don't see my working as being a possibility. But I have heard it is almost impossible to get disability due to a mental illness. Thoughts?
Can you help me remember how to smile? Make it somehow all seem worthwhile.

I receive SSI for my disorder. They actually accepted me without a fight, which is strange. Most people are denied at least once. I think it helped that I ended up in the hospital and/or harming myself whenever I had a job. >.>

I've never been hospitalized but do engage in self harming practices and obsessions when I work. Obviously they don't know that. Does it really take four months for a decision? Sorry im asking so many questions. Our money is just really tight and that does not help my stress...

It definitely does take some months to be approved, but if they decide to deny you it doesn't take nearly as long for the answer. >.> The positive is that once you are approved, they give you bulk backpay to make up for the months you were waiting. So for those individuals that apply and are waiting for years... they get a hefty amount of backpay eventually.

I filed for it. I was denied once and filed an appeal. I'm still waiting on their final decision, which I was told can take up to two years. It could be different for others, I'm just going by what I've heard. I don't think it's next to impossible to get accepted, I know quite a few people that have disability pay for a mental illness. However, it's not the easiest thing in the world, either. I had to do lots of paperwork, take phone calls, etc.
