I used to never pvp. Then I discovered the joy of pvp. There's some perverse delight in staking a mouthy gamer kid and knowing I'm this 48 year old woman on the other end. If only they knew! Haha.
It's even more joyful when I get a plethora of whispers screaming and raging. Then I respectfully /bow over their bodies and dance off.
Diablo 2 had an atmosphere and a skill/stat/item system that we fell in love with, and you have to remember that we started playing this game in the mid-to-late 90's, before MMO's went from text-based to graphical-based concepts.
When MMO's became graphical-based, I started playing this MMO that was based solely on PVP. I played it for years. The PVP in that game wasn't the typical 1v1 / battleground crap you find in Western MMO's today, where using your teammates as meatshields and mashing the right buttons makes you win. It was mass PVP where leadership and teamwork was all that mattered.
For a while I was with this crew of people who were all fairly oldschool to the MMO we played, and with this crew we had a female leader. She led the raids, the sieges, the PVP, everything. And her personality was like this:
Personally, I thought she was awesome. I'd say she was the third best clan leader I've ever had. More importantly, I think, was how I excited I felt whenever I heard "[Her nickname] entered the server" on Ventrilo, because I couldn't wait to her hear cuss out people for doing stupid s***.
I can't remember our clan ever losing a fight, and it was always drama around how our clan leader was a girl. South Europeans and South Americans in particular went crazy when they discovered that the undefeated clan on the server was run by a girl. It was like they had been castrated. It was like their whole world had fallen asunder. She had to be ugly. No, she had to be a transsexual. Yeah, a loser of a woman who over-compensated in games. It was the best insults they could come up with. All the guys in our clan just kicked back with beers and enjoyed the aftermath. She could hold her own in arguments. We all just sat there crying from all the laughing.
What I think made it so much more worth-while, was the fact that she was this 20-ish year old Canadian (She looked kinda like the blonde in that YouTube video). Appearance-wise, I don't know how many stereotypes that makes, but she just didn't fit any of them, so it made it so much more hilarious.
